AAA bike Services

While attending today's Delaware Bike Expo, AAA had a table set up and I had an interesting conversation with the representative there. I asked about bike related "Trip Tics" and he said that they were looking into it but the logisics were very difficult. He did tell me that AAA is seriously considering an emergency pick up service for bike riders. They weren't going to fix flats or make repairs on the road, but were considering some sort of pick up service where a stranded rider could be transported home or perhaps to a bike shop. He further told me that two pilot programs were currently being conducted in south Jersey and out west, I think in Portland.

I'm wondering if anyone from these areas are aware of the program or have utilized the service.

When I did a search on Bike Forums I saw mostly anti AAA posts but didn't read all of the threads. Perhaps we're looking at a turn around by AAA and a new valuable service on the horizon.

It's available as of July in the state of Washington, and I think I heard northern Oregon. This was a minor reason for me to renew this year, as I drive very little, but sometimes like to take long road trips with my older car. Bike service in case of a major breakdown like a busted seatpost would be nice (but I've never needed it before). AAA Wash. bike service info is here, with logical limitations:

There's always Better World Club, which has a bicycle roadside service program. They'll bring you to the local bike shop twice a year, and there aren't any geographic restrictions that I know of.

I suspect that the demand for these is much less than it used to be with GPS and the internet around (it's likely a service that is going away). If car drivers don't use them, AAA won't create them for cyclists. Look elsewhere for this information.

AAA is in the business of selling memberships and offers services it thinks will attract members. If members don't use those services, all the better for AAA.
