Colorful Bicyclist Spotted In Sarasota

Just a sighting on 9-8-12 in Sarasota Florida. Are bright clothes normally recommended for daytime riding?

Looks normal to me. I wish more cyclists would pay attention to the colors they wear. I routinely see cyclists here in NC wearing dark color jerseys that blend in with the pine forests and roads and it makes them hard to see. On the narrow roads around my area the the further out they can be seen the better off they are. I am not saying you need to look like a decorated Christmas tree, but at least wear something that makes you stand out.

I'm coming to Sarasota next month, and based on the riding there last year I will be bringing several shirts like that, and a flag.

I always wear bright yellow, orange, or white jerseys while riding to be more visible. I also ride with a front light on strobe and a red flashing light on the rear. Can't be too safe out there.

Ummm ... yeah. You name the colour, and I probably have a jersey in it. And I've got a collection of fluorescent yellow (and one almost fluorescent pink) jackets and vests.

What do you wear?

Did that cyclist give you permission to take his photo and post it?

Kinda depends on what you think the intent of motorists is. If you think they want to find you and run you down, then camo is good because they're less likely to see you. If you think they want to avoid you, then bright colors is good.

First they have to look up from their texting...

So long as they stay on the MUP or the rail trail, they can wear whatever they want, right?

I didn't need permission for this photo. A person may be photographed in public without giving consent. Further, that person's image may be published or displayed without that person's consent, so long as the image does not appear in an advertisement. This is common sense to many people. Many guys wear cargo shorts and a t-shirt on paved trails rebel. No one on trails is interested in trying to impress anyone.

Impress? What does being visible have to do with impressing anybody?
It may not be that important if you only ride on trails, but it is on the roads.

Safety equipment of any kind is not a guaranty. It does boost the odds in your favor.

My warm weather riding togs are bright green or bright red Target sourced workout gear. For cold weather I have a long sleeve orange or lime green shirts than can layer over something else. When I had my main rider powder coated, it was in a bright shade of blue/green. Looks sharp, attracts the eye.

I don't bother unless the conditions require it. I think I have one neon piece of clothing.
My club's kit is black and white as you can see and I rarely have issues.

Photos taken in public do not require the subject's permission to be taken or posted. That's why paparazzi get away with it.

So?

Many people don't ride trails.

You still haven't answered the question about what YOU wear.

And do you really think the person in the photo is trying to impress someone? Don't you think it is a bit rude to make that kind of assumption about a cyclist (probably a commuter or tourist, guessing by the panniers) just cycling by?

I have a number of black jerseys. I'm a little reluctant to wear them if I feel like the visibility isn't going to be pretty good. I have seen people with yellow jerseys that show up miles down the road, it definitely stands out

I pretty much always ride in yellow with flashing lights on the tool bag and helmet. No guarantees, but it can't hurt to be as visible as possible.

I usually tell my kids how to tell a real cyclist...just look for the ones with helmets. That's quite the rig for a recreational non-biker. I'm pretty sure they didn't dress to be seen...they just got dressed.

Edit...he's also got earphones in...hope it's just one ear.
