How Much Are My Bikes Worth?

I am building a brand new commuter/tourer from the ground up and need about 1500-1600 to do that. I have my specialized stumpjumper 29er that is barely a year old and my Surly LHT that is just shy over 2 years old.

These are the specs for the stumpjumper and the specs for the LHT can be found in surly's 2010 catalogue

Both bikes are in excellent condition. I treat them very well, the Stumpjumper I bought on a whim because a bunch of my friends rode mountain bikes. But I never got into the sport. I am much more of a roadie. The LHT I bought for commuting and potentially touring. I special ordered the bike and having rode it for two years I realize I dont like the 26 inch wheels, rim brakes, or the geometry.

Here is an album with pictures of both. I bought the stumpy for 2000 brand new and am hoping to get between 1400-1600 for it. I bought the LHT brand new for 1250 + accessories (Jandd racks) and hoping to get 750-800 for it.

Am I hoping for too much? I havent had very many offers yet at all.

They're only worth what your local market will bear. Or try fleabay...

You can look at "completed listings" on EBay and see if any comparable bikes have sold recently. List on EBay too, and specify local pickup if you don't want to pack & ship.

If I saw a mountain bike listed on, say, craigslist for over a grand, I would expect top of the line components and/or a practically unused bike. I probably wouldn't even click the link for it, though, because the thought of a used mountain bike for as much as you're asking just doesn't seem realistic.

My point is: If it's in perfect condition, I hope you're doing yourself a favor and showing some really great pictures and taking the time to list all of the features very well in the write-up.

50% of retail is a 'realistic' starting point in any case other than NOS where you might add another 10%-15%

Brand new left overs are easily found for 25% and more off of retail, brand new with warranty and service. Expecting that used , while not impossible, is a long shot to say the least.

$750 is probably top end, but possible for the LHT. Depends, of course, on the market.

I think I'll drop the stumpy down in price a little bit every week. the LHT I'm going to stay at 800 firm because I am including jandd racks and some nice metal fenders..
