Does anyone use a Thule "Spare Me" with a Rav4?

I'm looking for an easy on/off solution for a Rav4 without a trailer hitch.

I have a question about the "Spare Me" by Thule (http://www.thule.com/en-US/US/Produc...63XTR-Spare-Me) . Once the adapter plate is installed, and when the bike rack is off and not in use, can the spare tire cover be re-attached *without* uninstalling the adapter plate?

I don't know the answer to your question. Sorry about that.

But I think you need to go to the Foo forum and start posting.

Please.

Pretty Please.

You'll probably figure out why I'm asking fairly quickly.

I have one. The spare tire cover can be re-attached without uninstalling the adapter plate. Once the plate is installed, it's easy to get the rack on and off.

There is a long time very active poster in the Foo forum with the username jsharr.

I think it would be great fun if you were to show up and participate.

A bit OT, but IMO, installing a hitch and selecting from the many good and versatile hitch mounted bike racks, such as those that support the bikes by the wheels rather than swinging from the top tube, would be a more comprehensive solution.

Check out the Curt and/or Etrailer website for info on hitches and DIY installation. Also, Etrailer has tons of all kinds of bike racks to choose among. Shop around and you can find hitches for <$150 and they're very easy to install.

Some people have other uses for their hitch, like towing trailers. :p

I originally looked at getting the Thule spare tire mount for my RAV4, and downloaded the instructions for installation. It was pretty clear that when the rack was not in use, the tire cover would go back on fine. You might see if the installation instructions for the model you're looking at are online, since some of the specs might change from year to year.

I wound up going with a roof rack. It only carries one bike, but the spare tire mount didn't sit high enough for me to tow my trailer at the same time. :(

jshorr I can fit 2 bikes in the back of my 98 rav by folding the seats down, also what about a hide a hitch

jshorr 10-22-12 04:04 PM

Back seats down isn't an option -- car seats for the kids back there.

I'm not sure what a hide a hitch is, but I'll check it out. Part of the thought process behind the Thule (and maybe this is the case with a hitch rack) is that my wife (who is both small and not-technically inclined) could attach/detach it.

its a hitch you weld under he rav with a cotter pin so you can unhook it and hide it so its not in the way

A normal receiver type hitch is not much in the way of anything, is it? And as pointed out has the versatility of being able to tow a trailer!!! I do use mine to tow my boat or small box trailer, but have rented trailers on occasion too. There are other uses as well...

I had a friend who had a hitch installed on his Jaguar to tow his motorcycle on small lightweight trailer. It was custom as there was no off-the-shelf solutions available for some reason.

I have the previous version of the Thule spare tire mounted rack on my 2001 RAV4. It capably carries both a huge touring tandem and a light track tandem with no problems. I have taller than OEM tires mounted on the car to increase ground clearance, so I can't use the plastic spare tire cover that came with the car. The rack stays mounted and locked in place.

go with the Yakima SpareTime, so much cleaner looking then the Thule
