Welcome back, due to my heigh squats and I never got a long. Perfect form still produced aches and pains I never could live with. I ended up dumping it (with regret) and using 45 degree leg press for legs and deadlift for back. Never really had back pain after that.
BEyond the squat the WORST exercise I ever did was a smith squat. Evil freaking machine.
Welcome back and glad you recovered, once you start moving heavier and heavier weights you really start to notice natural physical limits, weightlifting is one of my favorite things to do (pushes mind and body beyond most limits)
