Are adult bike helmets in pink just really super rare?

Well since I can't access the Women's forum, and my wife will likely never sign up on this website (she's just now getting back into cycling after 20 some-odd years off), I guess I'll have to post this here.

My wife wants a pink bike helmet. Looked at Target, nothing. Looked at Walmart, nothing. Looked at LBS (2 of them), nothing. Looked on Nashbar, there's ONE that is over $100. I think there might be one or two on Amazon. Are pink helmets in adult sizes just really that rare?

I'm really getting tired of the whole internet-order-then-wait process. I would like to just walk into a store and get what I need, unless of course the store is just absurdly expensive. I wish she would just go for the white or teal women's helmets that the LBS has.

There's always Rustoleum.

LOL I may actually suggest that to her. she wants to ride this weekend but I really don't want to have to loan her my helmet again like I did last weekend.

I order bike helmets for the kids bike helmet give-away we do each spring, and pink helmets aren't available there. But I think we've only had one kid say they wanted a pink helmet in the 6 years we've done this too. How about a pink shower cap to cover whatever they have that fits her?

lol that looks kinda funny :p Sadly there is no REI outlet in the Memphis area. Closest one is 3+ hours away. :(

I found a pink-and gray one at Target a few years ago... lemme see if I have a pic. Want it? :p

This may be my only pic:

Bell, Fox, Lazer, Giro ..... they're actually pretty common. Suggest you just make a few phone calls - its possible not everyone has all their stock on the shelves.

Don't actually use Rustoleum- paint solvents and plastics can be a bad combination. If it's a $2 widget, try it and see. If it's a $50 helmet, don't.

PatrickGSR94 02-08-13 01:41 PM

Yeah I figured you were kidding about the paint. I was, too... sorta :p Maybe I can convince my wife to just get a white helmet or some other color and just put some pink stickers on it or something haha. Gotta match the pink bike ya know!

They are a rare as your ability to spray on pink paint. Find a helmet she likes then apply the special "for plastic" pink paint found at hardware/builders stores nationwide.

Ah success! Went to a different Walmart, the one nearest my office, and found one there. No paint or stickers needed. :)

Krylon Fusion, otoh, is made for painting plastic.

i love driving around to different stores just to find out they dont have what you're looking for... :D amazon 2 day shipping ftw..

Next time one or both of you is looking for a helmet, don't shy away from the ones over $100. Most of the more expensive ones are considerably cooler (better ventilated) and more comfortable... a nice helmet is one of the things that can be a noticeable improvement in comfort and gets you riding more often, especially in warm weather.

From a bike-snob point of view, nothing looks lamer than a person on a $1000 bike with $19 helmet. Whenever I see someone wearing a $150 helmet while riding on a beat-to-hell old city bike, I say to myself "there is someone who has her priorities straight!"

+1 on don't shy away from the $100+ helmet.

I've read so many arguments about cheap helmets being just as much protection as more expensive helmets. Even if it's true, there is no comparison in comfort. The 100+ has much better pads, better retension system, ventilation and a better fit over all. Heck, I wear 100+ helmets and if I try on a $50 helmet, my first thought is "NO WAY!".......no comparison! Just take a look at the pads in a $100+ helmet then compare them to a $25 model.

Not to mention the 100+ has better color options ;)

Wife's helmet, silver/grey fade with pink flames (Giro Pneumo $135)

I dunno, I tried on my wife's helmet and it feels just as comfortable as the Specialized helmet I paid $60+ for back in 2006. The shape looks better, too. I guess that could be just a fact of improved design over the years.

Why? My helmet is perfectly comfortable on a 3+ hour ride. It just looks a bit large on my head (it's actually a MTB helmet) compared to today's modern road helmets.
