What Kind Of Pedals Do I Have Here?

Hello, Everyone,

My '97 Klein arrived today- and it came with these pedals- they say Shimano PD-6600 on them, but when I Google that, none of the pics that come up look like these.

Also, if you know what they are, are they worth anything (Assuming they clean-up nice)? Might as well sell 'em or trade 'em, as I have no intentions of going clipless.

Don't know about the pedals but where is the Klein?

Awww, I ain't gonna sell or trade that!

In a few days, when I get a chance during daylight, I'll take some pics and make a thread about it (I'm running late today, 'cause I took time out in the afternoon to assemble it!)

Hmmm....should I post it in Vintage/Classic....or Road Cycling?

Oh...and it's got Dura-Ace brifters and derailleurs! (I'm movin' on up...from Sora/2300!)

well posting here and in Vintage/Classic would be fine but here wouldn't be bad either. Here is a 91, Dura Ace 7400 front to rear.

Ya know, I'm almost tempted to try it, now that I see that these pedals are SPD type, and therefore compatible with MTB [=walking] shoes......

No.... Must. Resist.

I'm one of those that believe not everybody falls due to the clipless pedals. Yes, my wife did once but she will be the first to tell you that she is a bit clumsy. I have not fallen due to clipless in 16 years.

You get in a habit of pulling out your foot 10 seconds before you stop, what's so hard ?

Awww, I'm not worried about falling- doofus though I am- I think I'm coordinated enough to handle that (Hey, I'm Eye-talian!)...I just hate the idea (and expense) of buying special shoes for riding. I currently ride with sneakers and strapless clips...works fine for my 25-mile rides.

Just single side Shimano SPuDs,, odds are the wrong side is up half the time..

Hence the advantage of dual sided..

Heh, I've noticed that already. Wonder what genius came up with that top-heavy design?

There's a used pair of these on Ebay, currently, for $59 - I'm watching 'em, to see if they sell (Doubt they will- unless someone is trying to recreate some period-correct bike from the 90's - which, ya never know. Turns out, these pedals came with the '97 Klein when it was new....)

Still run the Ultegra version of that pedal on my mud bike, they had a Dura-Ace version as well. They have served me well. Btw, if someone can't clip into single-sided pedals, I suggest they give up clipless.

I bought a pair of those or some very similar ones a few months ago for $10 from a CL ad. Didn't really need them at the time, but figured I would someday. I use standard SPD's and run the single sided style on my road bikes. Kicking them over to clip in is really not difficult. Your feet learn the movement after a while.

I can see that. But I must say that I have found the clipless far more comfy and secure when it comes to riding. I had toe clisp and straps before going clipless. Once I tried them on my single, I had a hard time riding our tandem (toe clips). I found my foot slipping around and all over the pedal. I immediately changed them too.

I see your point but I'm guessing if you ever try clipless, you don't go back................very few do but I bet more don't

I ride an mtb setup. Not too expensive. pedals $45 and shoes can be had for about $70. More inexpensive shoes can be had for about $30 on sale/clearance but are usually ugly.

You could be right. I'll likely hold on to these pedals- and if I ever come across a screaming deal on shoes, then maybe I'll give it a try, just to see what all the fuss is about. Who knows, 6 months from now, I may be saying "How does anyone ride without clipless?!"

That's another thing- I find most bike shoes to be fugly-with those big velcro straps, and often being white- they look like something a retired 80 year-old Sicilian in Florida might wear! At least if they only cost me $30, I wouldn't feel so bad....but they'd never get me to spend good money on fugly shoes. [puts on snobby voice] I can't! I won't!

Your handle reminds me: I would have like to have seen Mr. Bean on a bicycle! [It would be faster than his car....]

Ha! I was Mr. Beans" till I signed on forums. I had to use a "z" as the "s" was taken on line. My Cannondale has had "Mr Beans" on it since 2002 pre forum years.

Take a look at touring type shoes or even MTB type, there is a more casual selection.

Ha! That's cool, having your name on the bike! [Some refer to me as Mr. Beans, too......but that's only because of the flatulence]

Those aren't bad-looking shoes! Bet they're not the $30 kind though![Maybe the $70 kind?]

Are the touring similar to the MTB kind- in that you can walk in them, comfortably? [I'd NEVER get road shoes, which make walking difficult]

I'm seeing the shoes for $39 now, with free shipping- how the heil can I pass that up?

Any plans of eventually going farther? Somewhere clsoe to 50 is where the flex of sneakers starts to take a toll on a lot of people. When yuo get to that kind of distance a stiff soled shoe can pay off and once you are that far on hte expense track trying clipless makes sense. (And makes a lot more sense if you hang onto these).

If you are pretty sure of at least a couple of years without increased distance then try to find them a good home.

You'll thank me later. That is a good deal, that shoe looks to be $84 at Performance

I use MTB shoes on my roadbikes. I like the stability and walking ability of the sole. Also riding the tandem, the sole allows me to keep sure footed at stops. I tried road cleats and have had them slide on the pavement while trying to support the bike. Other rides may differ but I went back tothe recessed cleat of the MTB shoes.

Yes there are different types of cleats and the types of cleats you'll need are shown on the exploded diagram in my previous post.
