How hacked is your bike?
Hello!
My main bike is full of hacks and I love that about it, it feels mine! And it's special and it really serves its purpose in life in the best possible way! The latest one are the fenders which are made of plastic bottles I've found on the side of the highway.

Mine is classy. Bike Friday, W Hub Dynamo , LED taillight made for Euro Rear racks.
the taillight is now mounted behnd the bottom of the seat post, water bottle cage is there .
I used a pair of Zefal Mudguard struts, wrapped around the waterbottle cage,
Using the bolts that hold the cage on, to mount my taillight there,
low enough to not be covered by my Rain Cape.

My most hacked is probably my off-road Surly Troll, dropbar MTB:
diy cree flashlight holders
modern 135mm hub transplanted with 7spd freehub and redished for more symmetry
repurposed seatclamp (aside from one holding seatpost) added to seattube to mount lowered cable stop for canti brakes (google pics of the frame, you'll see why)
front brake modified to add a barrel adjuster style straddle wire
suntour GPX downtube shift levers transplanted onto shimano bar end shifter pods
cassette spacers shaved/added (and not all of them the same width) as well as derailer cable clamp modified, so indexing works with a shimano rear derailer and cassette

Depends on what constitutes a "hack"? My most customized bike is probably my 1989 Giant Iguana. It started out life as a MTB and has been repurposed as an expedition tour bike. New stem, handlebars, racks, fenders, freewheel, lights and a couple of added bottle cages. Others have been accessorized or have had upgrades to make them nicer to ride. Very few of my bikes remain stock they are all customized to my tastes and requirements.

...err all of them. Not one of my bikes serves the duty it was designed for. My mtb is now a long distance road rider. My roadie is a flat bar hybrid with light cargo ability and my cheap mtb shaped object is moddedto carry kids and cargo.

Obviously a man of few words!
OK - seriously - back to the post: Maybe I have an issue with the term 'hacked'. Just finshed two 'makeovers' and have one more to go. Basically all I kept was the frame in all cases, and there was some machining and mods done in all cases. But the final result is so slick you'd swear it was manufactured like that. Its really just the term 'hacked' that doesn't sit well with me.

Sometimes I don't have much to ask or say Also lately I have huge troubles to deal with and my brain just shuts down in the evenings/nights (free time for posting).
Bike hack is a DIY way to repair or make something new on your bike. Fenders made out of plastic bottles is a good example. Also wittling wood to make a bike mirror base. Stuff like that!
Burton I don't know, I find the term perfect and it's globally known now (see lifehacker.com,bikehacks.com, householdhacker.com) I like it because it's sort and sounds exciting
Onetherun, here are the fenders

Hack: not really proud of this one, but my rear derailleur cable stop is a quarter inch drive socket zip-tied to the downtube. About all you can say for it is, it works. Hopefully until the amazon order comes in.

Knowing that, I must say none of my bikes are hacked. I wouldn't be happy and I wouldn't ride them if they were. I'd wait till I acquired the proper parts. Of course my bikes are for recreation (nothing utility type) and I have enough of them to park one for a week or two if I couldn't get a part.

The closest to this topic I can come is when I once used a Giant seat post on a Lapierre. Maybe when I put Bontreger tires on my Specialized. Sometimes I have been known to mix SRAM and Shimano parts? I might redneck a repair to get me home but there is a reason the sell parts and assessories for my bike and sell them at a LBS or online. But that is just me I never hacked my motorcycles or my cars either.

OK - still don't know if 'hacked' is the term I'd use.
Have one-off light mounting installations on most of my bikes, a one-off helmet light mounting arrangement, a couple 10mm solid front axles installations, and some modified rack mounting installations. But none of that looks 'home-made'. A few other things might be unusual combinations, but are just stock parts used differently ie low ratio mtb cranksets on touring bikes or hybrids.
There are a couple homeless guys here that have built complete racks and platforms using hundreds of zipties and twigs though - is that more what you had in mind?

Not hacked here, but I am sort of proud of my bike's newly acquired "battle scars." I never understood how so many other cyclists were proud of their bikes having dings, dents, scratches, et al., but now I get it. My newest battle scars are from a bike accident that sent me to the ER, so the personalized, custom damages are a nice little reminder that I cannot take the turn at the bottom of the hill in my neighborhood at 28mph.
