I have had no car since november of 2003. I live close to my job and there are some things i miss such as being able to drive and pickup 30 pounds of kitty litter. Other than that i don't miss my car. True it sometimes is inconvenient if i need to go like 10 miles and its cold out or rainy, many times i just don't go, and if i had a car i would have gone-- wherever.
I have saved a lot of money on gas and car insurance since then-- i have spent zero on either of those since nov 2003. That helps a bunch when you don't have much cash to begin with as i do.

I own 1 car and 3 bikes. I hate the car but the wife needs it for the drive to work. I have been trying to convince her that she doesn't need it but so far it hasn't worked.

I have a car. I try to minimize the use of it. Unfotrunately being car free is not practical for me right now.

I haven't owned a car since October of 1997, and have done very little driving since then. Too much cost, too much liability. As long as I can get by without one, I will.

I suck at driving cars; I am much better at the bicycle. Though I am not "anti-car" - I do borrow cars from friends from time to time - I have gotten along fine not owning one myself since 2001.

Never had a car. After knowing what my fellow friends who have cars spend a month on them, I'm amazed. Insurance, car payments, etc. All that money, could have bought new bikes!
Seriously though, it depends on your needs. You could keep a car and try not to use it. If you live in the city, especially Chicago, there's no need for a car - the CTA runs well if you need it but I ride all year round. If I have to go to the burbs, which I have once in a while, I ride it - makes for a good long trip. You could make a weekend out of it (visiting the folks).

I sold my last car for $5.00, and they took my license away when I first tried to drive a friends car again a few years later. I think that 96 or 97. I haven't driven since then. It's only the last 2 or 3 years that I've been able to get by without using the bus more than once or twice a year.

I also sold my car last year when I moved into the city. I got $300 for it. I used that money the same day to buy a used mountain bike.

I haven't owned a car since 2001. I have 3 bicycles (one fixed, one cyclocross, one mountain beater). Instead of a car, I have a motorcycle. but if I REALLY need to use a car, I just rent one.

I didn't have a car from March 98 until Sept 04. I graduated school and my job is 30 miles one way, poo. In the in between years, 150 mile weeks (commuting, city riding only) were the norm. If I found a job in the city, that truck would get kicked to the curb soooooo fast. But it did allow me to have the day of days this past November: 7am ride motorcycle with the boys to Bucks County (super twisties), home to throw the mtb in the truck. Offroad to that perfect spot and shred into the sunset, home again to strap on the fixie and hit the mean streets if the cit-ay and end up at--- you guessed it, the lbs (local beer saloon).

Have not owned a car since 2001.
Have 6 bikes now; 3 are single speeds, one fixed, and two geared full suspension rigs. All these bikes (and other things) would not be possible for me if I had to keep up a car...
I'm lucky though, I have a bar within walking distance, and all the other needs are within a 3 mile ride.
Don't really miss the car so much, except for trailhead access - if I want to ride my mountain bikes. Relocating soon to solve that issue though.

I have an ailing station wagon, but will joyfully get rid of it when I leave for Japan. It's just not practical, unfortunately, to not have a car where I live at the moment.

3 years car free, pretty much to the day, I think. I am anti-car-culture, which means I understand that having access to a car is pretty much a necessity for most people in this country. For me that means Zipcar or a rental. I probably do that once every few months.

Car free since '03. Although I hate when mechanical or weather issues force me to ride SEPTA!

I have a pickup. Its only use is to get me from Cleveland to here and back, and to get to trails. If I lived within 10 miles from school and didn't mountain bike (or lived closer to trails) I would not have one. As it stands, my car will sit unused for weeks at a time.

Never had a license.
After my Dad's ICD (similar to a pacemaker) was triggered last year, he was not allowed to drive for six months. During this period, four out of the five members of my immediate family couldn't drive, all for different reasons: my twin brother (age 32) had a DWI a few years back, my sister (31) has flunked her driver's test twice, and I have never needed it...

sold my car when I moved to chicago last summer. best. decision. EVER.
for me it's much cheaper to take a cab/rent a car once every month or two to get out of town, buy big things, or just joyride. In less than a year i've saved something like $2,500 not having one. Takes some getting used to but is definitely worth it. I'm hooked.
