Noob Looking To Buy First Bike

Hey I'm a 20 year old college student at Virginia Tech looking to buy my first road bike. I'm looking to use this bike to commute to classes and just ride around explore Blacksburg. To be honest I don't know much about bikes at all, but searched craigslist in my area to see if I could find a solid deal. I cam across this one and I was wondering if any of yall could help me out by letting me know if this would be a solid purchase for my first bike and if the price is fair. I wan this bike to last me my four years at school.

Here's the link to the craigslist add.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

1st Bike , get it from a Bike shop.. unless you have an experienced cyclist with mechanical Knowledge
to Go with you to this bargain shopping ..

do you know what frame size fits you right?, No? advantage : bike shop .
maybe they have some refurbished used bikes or others on consignment.

At least in Chicago, single speeds/fixed gear bikes have a premium for no good reason. I think that if you want to get around and commute (assuming you will be carrying stuff) you may want something that has brakes on both wheels, the ability to put a rack on and such. Also a bike like that will probably put you in an aggressive position which I am not sure you want.

You can also look for something a bit more aggressive that still has the ability to be a commuter. Like a Trek 7.X, Cannondale quick, etc.

    +1.

College towns are more likely to sell used bikes in bike stores, too. Unless you want a fixed gear bicycle, I wouldn't suggest one.

You've posted this in The SSFG, Road, and General forums, gotten a negative in all three. What gives?

OP: Seems rather ordinary (not really bad), distinctly overpriced, and just a flip of an old frame that had been converted into a Fixie to amuse the previous owner; imho. I wouldn't want to try to commute to school with it.

Do you want to commute on a unicycle? No? well the fixed speed isn't far from it to be honest. Commuting means going up and down hills, not just looking stylish while riding on flats.
