Makeshift helmet pads
Anyone know what I can use as a substitute for helmet pads? I will eventually order some online, but am waiting until I need something else as to justify the shipping costs. The nearest bike shop is 50 miles away, so that's out.

What kind of helmet do you have? I have a few Giro Pneumo helmets and once read if you emailed them asking for pads, they would send them free of charge. I also asked about purchasing a retention system and they send me one for free as well.
I did have to produce some info on helmet serial number and size ( proof of purchase I guess).

Get some thin closed-cell foam(packing type). Cover it in some material cut from an old t-shirt. Stick on some velcro spots and there you go.

I've used closed cell 3/8 foam rubber weatherstrip from Lowes, about $3 (Amazon carries it too.)
Frost King 3/8-in x 10-ft Black Closed Cell Foam Window Weatherstrip
I used it to pad a couple of spots on my helmet that touched my scalp, even with the stock pads installed. It doesn't soak up sweat, and the adhesive backing lasts a long time. With 10 feet of it, you can cut strips and experiment with it.
Avoid the vinyl foam tape.

I s also thinking that many riders use cycling caps under their helmets or skull caps. That might act as a pad in itself. Might be tough in hot weather though.

I found a piece of the small bubble, bubble wrap and attached some pieces of that with white adhesive tape.
It worked like a charm; even more comfortable that the original pads. Thanks for the replies.
