Another Noob-ish Which Bike Question

I've read a lot over the last few days about Bikes Direct and types of bikes I might want to ride, and my head is spinning, but I think I've got some ideas of what I want.

I'm a pretty good wrench, so if I can work on cars and motorcycles, I know I can assemble a bike. That's some of the first wrenching I ever did.

I haven't ridden much in the last decade, and I'm just going to get rid of my old mountain bike (~1995 Gary Fisher Marlin), since it needs more work than I want to put into it. I'm picturing cycling in my life being trips to the store of 2 to 4 miles, an embarrassingly short commute to work of 1 mile, and pleasure rides on pavement and gravel paths anywhere from 4 miles up to whatever I can enjoy. My wife is in to doing this with me, so we'll probably get a new bike for each of us this summer.

I really like the look of the Windsor Kensington 8 from bikes direct. It seems like you all prefer steel, and a lot of other BD bikes are Al, plus the intenal hub strikes me as pretty cool.

If they sell it for $450, that means it might be equivalent to a LBS bike worth around $550, right?

Any other similar bikes in that price range that I should consider?

Anything with those parts on it.

I like the Kensington 8, as well. However, I'm also impressed with the Schwinn City IG8 from Nashbar:

Just love that black and silver look!

OTOH the best deal of the season is this one:

Have you ever trued/tensioned spoked wheels on a motorcycle? If not,it might be a good idea to have a bike shop do yours. Machine built wheels still need to be finished by a human.

A little on bicycles. And if I'm not good at it now, I'll probably take the time to learn. And only after I've ruined the wheels will I take them to a shop for truing.

Cfiber- Thanks a ton! Those Schwinns are certainly worth looking into!

Fietsbob- Any classic looking bikes around that price that you have had good experiences with that you could recommend?

Have you considered Craigslist?
