$98 for a CF pole? Are you insane?! Get a freaking piece of PVC pipe for $2.......
Anyway, PVC pipe would be way to flexible in reasonable diameters and weights...similar to reasons they don't make bikes out of PVC. Thin wall aluminum tubing would likely suffice and be considerably cheaper.
What I'm wondering is, who are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons.
Even a piece of copper pipe....anything. If I couldn't find something sufficient to use for under $5 at Home Depot, I'd beat myself with a carbon fiber paperweight!
A gopro camera costs $250 including taxes and the handlebar mount. Filming things in a cool way isn't cheap. If you use a metal pole it's heavy as hell and it throws the balance of the bike off. Anything less firm than carbon or metal and the flex will create wavy, un-watchable video.
In the end, you don't have to do this. You could just attach it to your helmet like everyone else. This is a how-to video not a sales pitch. Do whatever you like.
3rd person is a term for the position of the camera above and behind the subject.

Collin's great videos from 3rd person point of view inspired me to make a setup like that too, but I wanted to try something less expensive and readily available instead of the carbon-fiber pole. I'll be posting my test videos of my setup in a thread about the Mobius action camera.
Regarding the "persons", 1st person is the speaker or author ("I" or "me"), 2nd person is the person to whom the first person speaks ("you"), and 3rd person is someone else ("him", "her") in the environs. These terms are from literary analysis, but they're also used when talking about the point of view in movies or video games, as in "first person shooter games". So, a 3rd person POV video of a bike rider shows the rider and bike as though seen by someone on the ground or flying along with the bike.

Very cool. I wonder if ABS pipe would be a suitable substitute.It's a lot more rigid than PVC, and certainly far less costly than cf while still being fairly light.
Your setup is great. I built my mount with a T pvc pipe with threads, a small piece of threaded pvc pipe, two straight brackets, 2 wing nuts and a couple of screws. Mine points outward rather then inward but I guess a longer piece of pvc would work pointing inward (it may not be pvc because it is gray and not white). I'll post a photo of the set up when I get home.

I cut the ends off of the T so that it fits between the seat rails and put the bracket through the hole. In goes the screws to the second bracket. Screw the pole into the T and you're done. Also, it is pvc 1/2 by 6 inches. (the pipe in the last photo is 9 inches but you can either cut it or buy the shorter one)
