    hitch mount 4 bike rack

    I save an OEM class I hitch with a short tube. the set pin hole is near the entrance of the tube. looking for a sturdy rack that inserts it's tongue well into the tube but can still use this set pin hole which is so close to the entrance. any suggestions? I prefer not to use a rack whose tongue inserts just a couple inches and which does not take advantage of the full length of hitch tube. I hope that isn't too confusing. my Subaru dealer says i can use a 4 bike rack, but some I've seen have their set pin at the tip of their tongue and leave the remainder of the hitch tube empty. doesn't seem so solid to me.

    Your question is clear to me, and my thinking runs in the same channels. Sorry I don't have an answer.

    I understand your concern. If the tongue will go in deeply enough, Take it to a machine shop and get new holes drilled to give you what you need.

    (Actually, I would drill it myself.)

    looks like these 2 Swagman racks have a choice of two large holes so I can insert it in pretty far and use the 2nd hole

    Go with a Yakima. They use a wedge (like a quill stem) to secure the rack. I have Yakima racks on both of our cars (a 4-bike Doubledown Ace on my xB and a 2-bike HighLite on my wife's Fiat 500). They are both rock solid.

    thanks, I looked at the yakima 5-bike Doubledown Ace, actually had the rep install but it looked ridiculous cus just a couple inches inserted into the hitch and it just didn't look safe at all. so I returned it right there and then. there was a whole 'nother 3" of the hitch that wasn't being used. I like the swags cuz using the 2nd hole you can insert more of the tongue

    update: took the plunge after talking to Swagman Customer Service. I can indeed use either hole depending on how much I want to push the tongue into the hitch. I just have to move the threaded insert which is held in place by a couple of o-rings inside the tongue. I went with the more expensive Titan after Rob explained that it had 3 differences, a locking cable to lock the bikes with, and 2 cantilever joints for folding the arms and upright, instead of just a pin, making it easier to fold either. I should have it next week and hopefully will report back with good news ...

    Yeah, I have thought about modifying the mount on my wife's car to shorten the distance between the car and the rack. It is such a tiny car, and you have to drop the rack to open the hatch already. SHould be an easy job.

    I have been looking at replacing one of our cars with a vehicle that would take a hitch and to use a 4 bike rack. But after much reading on the e-trailer.com website, I came away with the impression that I would need either a Class 2 or Class 3 hitch. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but you might want to verify that all will be safe and secure with your rig.
