I'm new to the forum so if I'm posting in the wrong place I'm very sorry Please move it.
I'm a freshman at my High School and I know a group of guy that I ride with out of school. We're thinking about going to the school board and asking if there is a way with getting a school team.
My main Questions:
Is there a League for High School Teams?
What is the best way to get people to show them that it's a good idea?
Around here (SE Pennsylvania), I've never heard of high school teams, but there are many junior racing teams in the region, perhaps because of the impact and influence of the near-by Lehigh Valley Velodrome.
Beyond that, I can only suggest an alternative. Is there a LBS that might be willing to sponsor your team? That might be an easier thing to work out than convincing your school board and administration, with their likely concerns for liability, accountability, insurance, expense, etc. You might try to get some advice from experienced cyclists in the local bike clubs. Try noodling around here: http://www.bikehouston.org. Looks like there are a lot of bike shops in Houston. Good luck.
MiniLance: go to it, and good luck! My HS had just football, baseball, and basketball. Try though we might, we couldn't even get a track team. In 8th grade all the guys got called out of class to go to the auditorium to get yelled at because not enough of us went out for football. (One of my cousins broke his neck at a game, and my mom refused to sign the permission slips.)
If you can find a teacher, coach, or principal willing to help, that'd give you a boost. Go speak at the school board and be persuasive. And props to you for having the guts to start it.
Maybe you could get more participation if you covered several cycling styles, road, MTB, BMX, touring. If you also covered bike maintenance it could get some support from the workshop staff. Go for it.
Thanks I really wanna turn it into a class at my school we have one hour and fourty-five minutes class so we could get a great ride in before class ended.
I didn't think of a "class" when you said you wanted to start a "team." For the class at school, maybe there's a teacher who cycles, either recreationally or to commute to school, who might help you sell the idea. Or someone on the board or administrative staff who rides. Again, I suggest contacting your local bike clubs because members might know people on the board or might help support your idea.
I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My school is starting a class next year for an hour and fourty minutes we get to bike to school and first period we bike for and hour and 15 minutes and then we come back in and clean up and then go to the rest of our classes then after school there will be a group that rides with me back home which is 5 students as of right now and the ride is 24 miles so we could be biking just going to school, at school, and going home be doing about 60 miles so I could come home and do an hour or two and get a 100 a day.
