Schwinn world sport, what year and is it a boy or a girl?

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=339091Hello, I'm new here and have recently gotten back into cycling and have been just riding a mountain bike for excercise but want to get a road bike. Anyway I asked a friend of mine today if he knew of any road bikes for sale and he said that he had one at his house that I could have if I'd come and get it. Anyway I went to pick it up and it's a Schwinn World Sport that has a bent back rim and needs front and rear tires and tubes but other than that it looks serviceable. My question is how do I tell whether it's a mens or womens bike? Maybe the answer should be obvious to me but I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to road bikes. The serial number on the front sticker below the handle bars is 3498 which I read means it was built in the 349th day of a year ending in 8 so I'm not sure if it is an 88 or 98. I know the frame is chrome moly 4130 according to another tag on the frame. The bar that comes from the front fork to the seat post is the V shape as opposed to being straight horizontally from the fork to the seat post. Any help identifying whether it's a mens or womens bike would be helpful. Are these decent bikes?

Thanks, Charlie

Welcome to the Forums :).

Typically, the men's frame has a straight top tube and the ladies has a sloped top tube*. Here's a link to Schwinn catalogs. http://bikecatalogs.org/SCHWINN/MODE...d%20Sport.html

*For older bikes. Gets a bit blurry when talking about "compact frame geometry"...

My guess is that cbourbeau is describing a mixte frame, which was primarily a woman's bike. Mixtes have two top tubes running from the head tube to the dropouts. How many cogs are at the back? I think it was early-to-mid-80s that bikes started coming out with 6-speed freewheels. So if you've got a 5-speed freewheel, it's 70s or earlier.

Pics would help greatly.

Women's frame (not mixte,) chromo makes it a halfway decent frame. It was obviously made after Schwinn stopped making their bikes out of pig iron. My guess would be '88. As stripped as the frame is, it'll take a bunch of parts and work to make it rideable.

What's the difference between a mixte and a women's frame? Do you think modern people would laugh at a man who rides this bike?

I think it's possible that it's a '78, but that's just based on a vague memory of riding a bike like this (men's version) back in the late '70s.

Mixtes look like a mix of the two to me. There are other differences but I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell you.

I wouldn't. A lot of guys ride them around here.

Steel is gender neutral .. its Metal . :p

Whether it's a women's or men's bike shouldn't play much role in your decision.

An important variable is that it's FREE.

Take it in to a bike shop and ask them how much it would cost to make it ride-able, and then compare that with the cost of a Craigslist bike.

Hi,

A mixte is a womens frame but not the typical style :

Hey all Iwas just think the design of the mens bike frame with the top tube striaght across under the seat and is unforgiving if you have to come off the seat and asume the standover position , if not careful or don't have the correct standover, you could damage something if you catch my drift !!wouldn't the design of the womans frame be more appropriate for a man?? just asking???? does it make sense??

Hi,

The limitations of a womens frame are not acceptable in racing.
Also the same pretty much for the heavy touring crowd.

Its an oxymoron to suggest suggest a womens frame is more
suitable for a man than a mans frame, just don't be dumb enough
to buy a frame with no standover for yourself, for either sex.

Womens frames are more about skirts than standover, and
many women simply don't need them, and won't ride them.

Modern bikes are evolving to unisex "stepover" frames
and unisex down sloping top tube frames. Women
specific frames are not common, and not liked by some.

e.g. :

Like a womens going to ride that bike is a skirt and needs to preserve her modesty.

I think mixtes are cool. If I needed more bikes, I'd consider building up a Soma Buena Vista as a roadie.

(And no, I don't make a regular habit of falling off the saddle onto the top tube. )

Fastfingaz 09-09-13 08:16 PM

well I was riding around and I saw a bike leaning against a dumpster , stoped and it was a womans bike a shwinn admiral I took it fixed it rides nice has 700c wheels on it and 7 speed, anyway I got it and I ride it,,, I was just thinking of who ever designed the bicycles from the begining could have taken the nut cracker factor into consideration??? and I don't make it a habit of falling off and hitting the top tube either! I wouldn't think anybody does!!!!!!!!!!!!
