Interesting BBC article on Graeme Obree's attempt to break the bicycle land speed record with a very interesting new bike,

I really admire that guy, and hope he finds success this week at Battle Mountain. It looks like he qualified and ran Monday with fair results, but didn't Tuesday; I'm watching http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/whps...dchallenge.htm for results through the week. Go Graeme!

I'm just back from Battle Mountain. Graeme in person is very humble and very happy to be accepted into the HPV club. Anyone who shows up and races has overcome huge hurdles already.

It's a shame he didn't stick around for Saturday evening's record-setting run by Dutchman Sebastiaan Bowier from team TU-Delft/Amsterdam:

    Pretty impressive speeds all around.

Jeff: thanks for the pics from the event; I followed the link on the Recumbents.com site to your Flickr site.

It looks like although Obree was out of the running for an overall win at Battle Mountain due to some design problems with the bike, he did post enough speed to grab a World Record in Prone Bicycle title, breaking a recorded that's been standing for about a couple of decades. That's cool.

But boy, Bowier's record run was a blistering 84mph+! It must have been pretty cool to see that come blasting down the road!

Actually, 83.13mph. I had to triple-check the numbers when they came up... and then they had to stifle me until everything was verified. I got "volunteered" to help at the timing table when one of the other volunteers had to leave midday Saturday.

Whoops, thanks for the correction; but yeah, that's still really fast!

This gets so little attention both on this site (where people actually like bikes) and in the general press. It's too bad the pros don't run some races where there are no limits on design. We'd see some real innovations then.
@Jeff Wills: thanks for the links and that's very cool that you were there to see this. I'm with chaadster; it must have been a blast to see someone go that fast on a bike.
