I've been riding religiously for almost a year now. I have had close calls of varying degrees, dealt with road rage and had more just What The Freak moments than I can count. But I have never ever thought I was going to get run over and killed until today.
I looked back saw a SUV that was about a quarter of a block behind me so I took the lane about 100-150 feet ahead of a left turn I needed to make. I think it's worth noting that the turn is against traffic and there is no turn lane. Next thing I know I hear an engine behind me. Then honk, I look back and SUV is a foot or less from my rear tire. I begin to put out my left arm to signal to him that I'm turning at the next intersection, which is less than 50 feet away, and I hear hooooooooooooooooonk. Without thinking the turn signal became a finger and ******* pulls into the oncoming lane and gets right along side me. He begins to come over into me. Stops with less than five inches of space and begins to come over again. I know he saw me cause the front passenger door was directly next to my bike. I yelled "What the **** are you trying to do? Are you trying to kill me?" so loud that people on the sidewalk heard it and my throat is still sore. Someone yelled at me to calm down.
He just flew by me in the wrong lane. The whole thing happened in less than two or three minutes but it felt like an eternity. I'm still really shaken up. I can't decide if the ******* was just trying to scare me out of the lane or if he really wanted to run me over. For what's its worth I never gave him the lane. I didn't catch a plate and even if I did the NYPD would at best tell me there is nothing they can do at worst tell me I'm not allowed to take the lane.
I'm sorry for ranting but I needed to let some steam out. I'm going to get that helmet came ASAP.
Too long; justifiably didn't read. Son-a-***** in SUV got road rage, I can't decided if he was trying to scare me or run me over. Thinking about helmet cam much more seriously know. Sorry for rant.
