Had an auction a few weeks back. I was looking for an old cheap bike for rainy days/winter time riding to school. I picked up an old schwinn impact assuming it was a mid 90s relatively cheap nothing special bike. (Heck it could have been a wal-mart bike for all I knew) One of the main reasons I bought it was because it had a rack ($20) and planet bike fenders (I'm assuming at least $20) on it already. I paid $50. It was a bit expensive for that auction, and I was wondering why someone took it that high, but I was happy with my purchase (hey I got fenders and a rack out of it.)

The bike itself is in pretty good shape. The tires are 100% gone. The sidewalls are just gone, and all you can see is thread. (Yes, THREAD, not tread.) But other than than everything is there.

As I brought it home and was looking at it, I noticed a few things that a cheap bike (wal-mart) shouldn't have, so I go look it up.

If I read it correctly, it turns out that these bikes were one of the last actual schwinn bikes (not the rebadged crap you buy at wal-mart now-a-day.) Is this true? The bike looks like this..

Anyway, I plan on fixing it up and getting it running well again and using it on some trails while riding with my GF (she's not very quick, so I shouldn't have much trouble keeping up with her on her brand new 29er, I think of it as a challenge) as well as using it as my winter bike.

Are these bikes some of the last actual schwinn bikes? Did I pick it up for a decent amount? Any other comments?

Looks good. Definitley worth $50.00. Probably not a Chicago-Built Schwinn, but a good quality bike. Old MTBs make great all-around riders and last forever. Had a Schwinn Mirada from around the same era that I loved. Currently have a '95 Schwinn S 2 that I got from the junkman in trade for a bundle of copper wiring & a busted weedeater. Very good quality.

Bought a trashed Varsity for $25.00. Sold the rack & seat for $40.00. Fixed up the bike with a set of 26" coaster rims & sold it for $160. You made a smart buy.

Sorry Schwinn ever *****d out the name. Used to be a mark of quality or at least durability. Now it's been applied to some of the sorriest messes to balance on two wheels.

Looks like one of the Giant built Schwinns, good solid bike. I have several Giants from the late 80's early 90's and they are excellent bikes. If the picture you linked to is like the bike you bought, you got a very good deal. Good quality middle of the lineup bike.
