bicycle magazines

Well it is that time of the year and my Niece is now a brownie. So, I received a link to the GirlScouts magazine website and they list 3 bike mags. I am not sure which one is the best and am looking for help here. I am an on road rider and want to be a good Uncle (but not getting all 3 magazines good).

Bicycle Times
Product Description
Bicycle Times is dedicated to the fun and practical enjoyment of the pedal-powered sport of bicycling. Each issue features in-depth information for a wide range of cycling enthusiasts, from the occasional rider looking for area bike paths, to the seasoned rider participating in area fundraisers.

Bicycling
Product Description
Since 1962, BICYCLING has been inspiring people to get more out of their cycling passion. Each action-packed issue is filled with proven secrets to go faster, stronger, longer. Increase your stamina; buy the best gear for your money; locate a great ride; improve your performance; perfect your technique; fuel your passion.

Bike
I could not find this on amazon but it appears to be a mountain bike mag.

I get both Bicycling (because I got a great deal on it) and Bicycle Times. They complement each other nicely as they really are for different audiences. Bicycling is a lot more formulaic and is aimed towards roadies (although they are almost trying to branch out more). Bicycle times is more off of the beaten path.

If I were only to get one, I'd probably just get Bicycle Times.

(And I know nothing about "Bike").

The only reason to get Bicycling is because the League of American Bicyclists includes it with your membership. But then you also get their magazine American Bicyclist as well.

Bicycling Times is more interesting, and more aimed at the everyday cyclist.

I've read Bike, but it's been a while. It's mountain bike oriented, but interesting reading if you want to appreciate mountain biking without actually risking injury.

I get Bicycling through my support of League of American Bicyclists. It is like most sports magazines...mostly about higher end gear, new bikes, bike reviews of the latest thing - mostly for road bikes, and lots of ads. I don't mind the read since I'm already getting it, but it isn't quite my bag and I skim through each issue pretty quick. If you're into keeping up on the latest gear and what not, I think it'd fit the bill. I'm more into commuting, touring, recreational riding with my family, fixing up and maintaining my bikes, and issues around cycling infrastructure and what not, FYI. If I didn't get it for free, I wouldn't order it. I'm not sure about Bike Times...

The "Times" is for the average person whereas all the rest of the bike mags on the market today are for gear heads and freaks.

Bicycling Times looks interesting. I get really annoyed when the online subscription costs the same as the print edition though.

I subscribed to Bicycle Times for a year and didn't care for it. It's good for everything non-roadie, so is one of the few bike mags I don't get. If I could get only one bike mag, it'd be Road Bike Action.

I may have check out Bicycle Times; used to get Bicycling, it got 'snooty'. Bike Magazine has, for years, focused on the more extreme side of mountain biking, which isn't bad, either.

Just FYI, Momentum Magazine is a fun read, too. It's more lifestyle-oriented.

I think "Peloton" should be included in any discussion of cycling magazines.
It is very different from any other mag I've seen, so I recommend buying one at the newsstand just for a look.

I have 15 grand kids so I subscribe to Bicycling whenever one of them has a magazine fund raiser.

Bicycling has never tested a bike, bike component, bike clothing item, or bike accessory that they didn't like.

Very true - if they have any criticisms, they downplay it and sandwich it in between generic compliments. I get Bicycling, too, but I don't think I'll renew since they went to online subscription only for Bikesnob NYC. Plus if you like their Facebook page, you'll eventually get to read all their articles for free. I like the physical magazine for my quiet, uninterrupted reading sessions where I don't care to take a piece of electronics with me (ie the bathroom).

Bicycling magazine has done a much better job of relating to the casual cyclist then a couple of years ago when it was nothing but hard core roadies and high end bikes. In fact, the latest issue of Bicycling magazine shows people touring in Kakhi's and regular shorts instead of spandex. Sure, Bicycling also caters to high end cycling because of the ad revenue. Bicycle Times only comes out every two months.

Bicycling has never tested a bike, bike component, bike clothing item, or bike accessory that they didn't like.
Agreed, but they aren't alone in that. If they gave a bad review, that removes that company from ever advertising in your magazine again.

I agree about the growing diversity of articles in Bicycling. I find it has lots of good info on a variety of topics.

Yep. Heaven forbid they should alienate a potential advertiser with meaningful testing. Consumer Report they ain't.

Bicycling took the art of reviews to a whole new level. With them, the maker wrote the review and they put their name on it. Of the 5% of its content that isn't advertising, if you read about 6 issues you've gotten all the original content that you'll ever see there.

I agree. I subscribed for years from the mid-'80s and into the '90s and it was a much "smarter" publication back then. I took advantage of an Amazon offer for a $5.00 subscription a couple years ago and it has become pop (cycling) culture fluff.

Bike is for the mountain bike crowd. Bicycle times is for the everyday rider, commuter and has a broad range of articles. I subscribe to both.

In the 80s I subscribed to Bicycling, and mainly read it from cover to cover. Now it is a cycling comic book with glits and pictures for someone with an IQ of 80 and zero attention span.
