Tasty Bugs
 

On my ride home yesterday I rode through several clouds of bugs (those tiny suckers with little white globs on their butts -- eggs?) and, after spitting out several, just started swallowing. No taste. I have, however, eaten some nasty bugs... and have tasted some that weren't that bad. Maybe this is a cheap energy bar substitute? Surely y'all have experience with this?

gross... luckily i haven't had one get caught in my mouth yet... i've had some ping off my helmet, but thats about it.

It always freaks me out when they get caught in the vents on my helmet .... I've never had a bee sting my head though (knock on wood).

Getting a bug in your helmet is bad. Having a wasp get cauught in your jersey is worse. As for catching them in your mouth, well, spit out the big ones, swallow the small ones, and don't chew.

Can I cook them, I don't want to be eating uncook bugs, at least I want to saute them with Garlic and onion that will taste a little better

Yeah, allows you a little choice as to what you are eating as well! Mucho protien and a little fat .... hmmmm ... compressed bug energy bars.

Ever get them in your eye? This annoys me more than anything.

I'll probably get jumped on for this one ... but were I to choose between a helmet and eye protection it would be my trusty sunglasses. I'd wear them inside and out 24 hours a day if my peers would allow it! No bugs in my eyes man, ever.

It can be a bit irritating when they get trapped between your glasses and eye.

From what I understand about the nutritional content of insects, they are more a meat portion than an energy source. They are very high in protein and low on fat (at least most insects). Some insects have formible defense mechanisms to protect them from being eaten by birds and these include but are not limited to: stings, ultricating hairs, cardiac glycosides, combustion chambers (bombedier beetles) and similarly nasty surprises.

Here’s a true story - it has nothing to do with bikes but a lot to do with bugs.

My wife and I were driving through Hershey Pa one summer day. I was driving with the window open and had my arm on the window. A bee flew (or was pushed by the wind) up my shirt sleeve, down my back and into the back of my jeans. At which point the bee decided to inform me of his displeasure with my ass in the most forceful way he knew.

All I could do was try to move away from the pain (which was impossible because of the seat belt) and yell “Ooh ooh” with each pelvic thrust. My wife thought I was having a heart attack. Before she could do anything about it, I pulled the car to the side of the road, yanked on the emergency brake, popped the seatbelt, flung open the door and before the car came to a complete stop I rolled onto the ground while pulling the back of my pants down in an effort to relieve the pain.

I then looked up from my prone position into the face of a cop who had been directing the tourist traffic. He was frozen there in the middle of the street, his hand still raised in mid direction, and his mouth agape. I of course, got up, jumped in, and pulled away before he could recover from the shock.

Maybe this should be in Jokes - but it's a true story.

I think I've mentioned before, what I want to know is why they don't respect the fact that I'm a vegetarian :)

Talking about eating bugs...

A lot of people marvel at the great adventures I enjoy traveling around the world. To really and truly adventure, though, you have to melt into the fabric of the societies you visit. That means eating the local fare.

Including bugs. I have had huge catapillars rolled in leaves and roasted in an open fire. I have eaten glazed bees on rice. I have had maggot sprinkled spinach. I have eaten vinegared worms (huge) in jelly. I have eaten roasted and salted grasshoppers. I have had larva of all sorts - raw, cooked, mixed with other nasty bits.

Dining like this really makes you know you are adventuring.

Worst is a bee in the mouth. Hope that never happens. Atop some of our hills where there are lots of citrus, bees seen flying about everywhere. Seems, see the most bees on decents.
Yeah, taste of bugs.. not always successful at spitting them out. Seems most taste acidic.? There are disadavantages in talking to your cycling partner. Worst incident- watch where you spit when you are with a cycling group. Get that bug in your mouth, you spit witout thinking. I did. sorry !
When cycling in Loire in France commented- I thought a couple of their bugs tasted chocolaty... Told that to them, didn't understand. French being the gourmets that they are. Still most are acidic.

About 20 years ago riding along a canal in N California a large dragonfly (measured in inches) flew between my glasses and eye. It was stuck. I was partially blind. It buzzed like a crashing helicopter. The memory haunts me to this day.

I don't remember how I removed it, but I think it involved a wrestling match and a fight for my glasses. I'm just glad he didn't go for the bike.

Man, that salad up there keeps pulling me in. It looks good! A piece of cucumber, a larvae, little sesame dressing .... mmmmmm
