1. Take an extra 5 minutes to go back inside to get some seat saver if it slips your mind.
2. Always wash your bibs after 1 use.
3. Do not do 75 mile solo long ride in a drizzle with a combinatinon of lessons 1 and 2. You will get saddle sores.
4. Saddle sores are a sonofa*****.

Just because it shifts fine by hand cranking doesn't mean it will be the same when you are riding the thing. Skipped 1st gear and broke a spoke, luckily i was going up hill and not that fast

Don't cave into peer pressure and skip three of the four rest stops and the lunch stop on a charity ride century.

...Give till it hurts? Ouch.

Totally been there.
My main lesson applies to everyone who's ever thought "Yeah, my knees hurt, but I'll get stronger":
SPIN. Seriously. It's ok to spin...for single speeds/fixed gear, get a good gear ratio that bridges the gap between speed and climbing. Having a gear ratio that can get you up to 30mph doesn't help much if your knees explode on the first few hills.
Spinning saves knees...and possibly lives.
