I picked up Brooks leather handlebar tape in blue just recently for one of my bicycles. It would have been a bargain at $35.

If $35 bartape is extravagant, how about $1500 brakes? (or anything on the fairwheelbikes site for that matter?)

These kind of covers/caps is what I thought might be on the pictured bar.

I got Deda bar tape off ebay for $13 including shipping for my Olmo.

For my daily commuter I use old tubes.

Those are two different styles, and the lower pic, the carbon plugs, are the type shown in wrapped bar pic.

Among other things, Fairwheel's wheelsets deserve a look, and I think their Kinlin/Tune wheels are about as cheap as you can find sub 1400gm alu clinchers.

Lizardskin DP is well worth $35. Yeah I've used the Nashbar brand cheapie tape. It rode and felt like $2.00 tape and it only cost me $9.00!

I'm confused as to how a set of $15.00 Nitto bar plugs is going to be packaged in a $26.00 bar tape box.

You guys that use Old Tubes as bar tape, does the lead content in the material not scare you? I always wash my hands after touching tubes as i've seen several of them marked with "low-lead" paint. Anyone have further info on this?

Evidently, it's the valve (esp. the brass bits) that houses the lead. Had a similar question last month.

Just throwing this out here in the latest bar tape thread: Does anyone make dark green (like forest green or British racing green) handlebar tape these days? I've searched and found very few options - just some "iffy" looking stuff on eBay from a seller in China.

Thanks.

I like Williams bar tape. $10 for any color you want, as long as it's white or black. It's kind of porous foam so white wouldn't likely stay that way or be effectively cleaned.

Brooks has it in leather:

Deda makes some dark green

There was no way you could get me to spend $35 on bar tape. Then I bought a set of very lightly used bars that were wrapped with Lizard Skins.

That's all I've used since.

If all you have ever used it the $3, $9 or $15 stuff then you have no experience living with Lizard Skins at all. So, you don't really know.

Do you??

Thanks for the green tape suggestion, GeneO. I had seen the Brooks tape before and probably won't spend that kind of money for this particular bike, but the Dada tape looks promising. I might try it. Thanks.

I usually buy Cinelli but went with SRAM Supercork (~$13) and Nashbar Deluxe Cork tape (~$6) for my 2 bikes this season. Both are very nice inexpensive alternatives. I like the SRAM especially because it comes with a set of nice reflective bar plugs, and the embossed logo aids in neat wrapping.

After all the hype about the lizardskins I bought some for a pair of risers I was riding and I don't really care for it, I have some Fizik microtex on my other bike and I prefer that way more. Different strokes and all that.

My experience with lizard skins...sunscreen + sweat = still slippery. However, with a nice set of gloves, it becomes like sticky fly paper.

Arms...then I sweat, then it runs.

Or if you forget to wash your hands before running out the door.
