I have a riding buddy with an early 2000-ish aluminum Schwinn branded road bike with carbon fork and seatstays. It has Tiagra 2x9 and Shimano hubbed wheels. It has Taiwanese assembly stickers. So, the bike is perfectly serviceable and works okay for him. He rides often but isn't particularly demanding or discerning about the ride characteristics...

Precisely. Anything with a lower price tag like that is going to be serviceable (and more importantly, ride-able), but obviously not the Cadillac or Porsche of bikes. BTW, I forgot to mention that I'm insanely jealous of your bike stable.

Thanks, that's kind. My bikes aren't fancy or sought after. Just decent, working man's bikes...
