Painting my front sprockets?
Hi, I'm thinking of painting my front sprockets black, is there a special kind of paint i have to use and what's the best way to clean the grease off of them, and also is there a certain way of doing it, thanks

It would be a lot simpler and give better results to buy black chainrings.

if you are in the young fixie riding software engineer set, and so money is no issue,
take a Surly Stainless steel chainring to the Powder coater ..
it will add 0.5mm of thickness , until the chain wears thru it on the edges..

Steel or aluminum rings?
Assuming they are aluminum, take your crankset apart and clean the chainrings as well as you can with mineral spirits. Then wipe them with vinegar to etch the aluminum. Prime and paint.
I've never painted chainrings and I'm not betting on how long it might last. On the other hand, you don't have much to lose. At worst you'll want to buy some replacements. At best you'll have the satisfaction of having done it yourself.

If money is no issue, just buy a Fibre-Lyte carbon fiber chainring. It'll stay black until it wears out.

My take is as someone using the Stainless one as is , it's long wearing, and reverseable .
mine hides behind a disc chainguard , that happens to be black ano.
