Bike Hoist For Garage Storage....
I'm thinking about one of the bike hoist pulley systems to raise my bikes in the garage but I have a question.
Say I lower a bike and take it out riding. What happens with the empty hooks at that point? Should I leave them down or raise the hooks? IF I raise the hooks, will there be enough weight with the empty hooks to come back down by themselves?
Does that make sense?

Yeah, I just leave them lowered. I don't use them for bikes, but sea kayaks. I was thinking of getting some for bikes as I now need the wall space for something else.
I see the issue you're talking about though. It needs weight to be able to lower them.

A broom handle with a hook on the end won't work? Or just hang something on the hook like a small can of sand.

I have four of these in my garage, and four more bikes upside down on simple hooks.
The issue will be insufficient weight for the latch mechanism to engage, so the hook closest to the latch will drop down. The suggestion of a small threaded hook on the end of a broomstick is an excellent one. That's what I use to grab the end loop of the pull cord when the hook drops and the end goes to the ceiling.
At any rate, don't worry about any of this. You'll figure it all out by experience. Just make certain that you have the type of saddle that can support half the weight of your bike. Certain leather saddles (Cardiff) have problems with the rail to frame welds, and they can be damaged stressed by the hanging.

Interesting. The welds will support your weight over bumps on the road but get damaged by ~15 lb of static force hanging? Is it a directional thing or something? Pic?

The Drive Side is Within
i hook the hooks together when not using it, and raise it part way. It is then easy to lower.

Truth in advertising, I had this saddle on my touring bike, and had the lifelong habit of lifting the bike (even while loaded) by the saddle. This would've been more like 45+ lbs as I swung the bike around. I no longer do that, instead lifting by the rear rack now.
