Hey there
So I just got a new bike, Carrera Subway, and want to find out what size tyres it has to order some new tyres. I want some thinner ones to make it faster on the road.

However, I'm confused with the sizing - eg what does 700x23 mean?
Also, how do I measure the size of the tyre?

I just looked at the description, and for my bike it says this : CST hybrid tyres – 26 x 1.9

Can anyone explain that for me ?

Better to get used to the ETRO numbers on the tire side wall ..
622-32 or 559-50

700C is a French Rim-tire size .. in ETRO it's 622mm , Bead seat diameter..
then the 2nd number is the width 23MM in your case .. a racer bike wire bead equivalent
of the tires the Pro teams buy that are traditionally Not clinchers ,

But Tubular, Inner tubes Sewed closed and Glued to a rim.

26" is 559 BSD. about where the Brake pads hit the rim..

ETRO - European Tire and Rim Organization
a standard they agreed upon so tires fit rims though not made in the same company or country..

For everything you could want to know about tire sizing, take a look at Sheldon Brown's site https://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

For your specific bike, you need a 26"(559) tire, stock the bike has 26x1.9, if you are looking for a faster rolling tire, something like this https://www.wiggle.co.uk/continental-...pid=5360219310 lots of options out there, as long as the tire is a 26"(559) it will fit your rims. Getting faster will require fitness, don't assume that just putting different tires on will make it faster instantly.

Slick tires will be easier , more efficient Rolling than Knobby ones ,

fast is still about pushing into the air resistance.. there , A stiff wind to your back helps.

want a Race wheel like TdF,? you buy a second Bike , may be more than 200 GBP ..

Yes, all of them will fit. As long as it's "twenty-six by one-point-something" e.g. 26x1.5 or 26x1.95 it'll fit your rim. It's important to stick with decimal and NOT fractional (e.g. 26x1 3/8 "twenty-six by one-and-three-eighths") since they aren't ideally compatible.

You don't need to go all the way to 25mm. For mountain bike purposes, I'd call anything 37mm and narrower to be 'narrow." Here's a few more possibilities.

If you go from large diameter tires to skinny ones, you will also need skinny tubes. If you make a minor change in diameter, then the existing tubes should be ok.

Trying to fit fat tubes into a skinny tire means likely folding the tube, and possible problems getting the tire to seat correctly because of the extra tube material in the way.
