Mercedes-Benz launches 2005... bicycles

http://www.motoring.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=2446510

It appears Mercedes-Benz is offering a $1,200.00 auto-shifting bicycle. Form the article:

>>>Mercedes-Benz has launched its 2005 range of bicycles with three models, including what it claims is the first really comfortable and safe bicycle with an eight-speed automatic gearshift system and active spring suspension.<<<<

If these bikes are the "first" safe and comfortable bikes, where do ours stand next to these hybrids? Regardless, I don't know why a motor car company would want to bother with an eight-speed automatic gearshift system. This is not an automatic Nexus Hub but an eight-speed derailuer! (sp)

All the electronics on this bike is incredible. Way too much and unnecessary.

The article called the automatic a 'cyber nexus' and the chainline in the photo appeared to be consistant with an internal hub. They also referenced a 'roller brake' that was unaffected by water which also sounds like the internal brake option for an internal hub.

Like cars, the bike needs an automatic transmission because it's too hard to shift while talking on the phone.

I didn't see the video entertainment system. What gives?

It sounds like an internal hub to me but this is news if Shimano is releasing an 8 speed autoshifter. It's not even listed on their website.

The bike seems to be missing a few other standard Mercedes-Benz features like turn signals that do not function.

I don't know how often I have come along side of a $90,000 MB and shaken my head in sympathy, remarking to the driver what a shame it was that such an expensive car wasn't equipped with turn signals. And now....their bikes! Have they not learned? LOL

Mercedes-Benz bicycles. What a joke. I guess they are for those metro-sexual types that have to have plenty of bling factor and poser points.

They used to have a pretty nice line of bikes made by AMP designs. The current mtb is probably no slouch and the automatic is undoubtably the best auto-shift bike made. That said, every bike in the current line cheapens the name of Mercedes. Even the city bike was a very nice AMP back in the day, Mercedes bike still way nicer than hideous Jeep or Hummers.

You call your personal Mercedes Benz wrench who comes out and replaces it.

I wonder what genuine Mercedes Benz chain lube costs?

Honda makes bikes, but they have been for years, mainly freeriders, and really really expensive.

Speaking John Deere, I can't believe they make motorcycles now. Not sure about bikes though

They should stick to cars. I couldn't wait to drop one of the riders on those with my lowly Orbea.

I don't even think there is a bling or poser factor. I will laugh at the owner if I see him or her with a Mercedes-Benz bicycle.

They are marketed towards people that like Harley Davidson... big, loud, heavy motorcycles.

I'll stick to Japanese crotch rockets myself.
