when my wife and i first bought bikes in 2012, we went to the local performance bikes and looked at the hybrids there, and then we went to the local target and looked at the bikes there.
what appears as the same frame and similar bikes is definitely not.
the performance branded one included shimano components, the target brand included 'schwinn' components for a lot of stuff.
quality was definitely not the same.
we ended up with the performance ones for a reason.

I bought a new Schwinn deluxe cruiser at an LBS, and found the bike to be crap. First, the front V brake cannot be adjusted to stop the bike without making noise. The brake pads are not compatible with the aluminum rims, which quickly became galled. The chrome-plated parts like the crankset, fork, pedals, and hardware began to rust immediately. There was slight orange-peel in the paint on the fenders, which got worse over time as rust developed underneath.
If you are going to get a Schwinn, get an old American-made model, the new ones are crap.

As one person noted, note the difference between normal Schwinn bikes and Schwinn Signature bikes. The latter are comparatively higher end than normal Schwinns. But still, finding LBSes that carry Schwinn Signature bikes is probably not too easy since Schwinn as a whole doesn't exactly have a good reputation with most more knowledgeable cyclists.
with a 300$ budget the only way to avoid crap-tier bikes is knowledgeable purchase of a good used bike
go to craigslist, buy a 80's steel specialized hardrock in her size for no more than 200$, take it to a co-op for overhaul, fresh brake pads, slick tires, riser stem
should end up with a good bike that'll last years longer than any new schwinn at that price

^Agree on the used bike. Scour local C/L for Trek 7.1 or 7.2, or Giant Escape in her size. These can be found in the $200-300 range used and in barely-ridden and kept indoors condition. A better value...

Kind of sad to see what has happened to the grand old name of Schwinn. My first good quality LBS bike was a Schwinn LeTour. It was a couple or three rungs up on the Schwinn bike line. This was back in '83, and several of the top of the line Schwinns even then were great bikes. Their Paramount was a great bike.

Poorly. The old LeTours had Columbus steel frames, Sugino cranks, Dia-Compte brakes, and Suntour Cyclone front/rear mechs and shifters. I still have one. It's my winter/trainer bike.
