for 350 this moto is pretty decent
Save Up to 60% Off Road Bikes - Motobecane Mirage

I agree that you should sell the walmart bike on craigs list for what ever you can get and use it towards your purchase.

I would recommend against buying the goofy nano.

final thoughts save up alittle more cash

this mirage is only $400
Save Up to 60% Off Road Bikes - Motobecane Mirage S

this one $500

i've looked at the price point. Why would you choose the Mirage S instead of the Super Mirage here: Save Up to 60% Off Steel Road Bikes - Motobecane Super Mirage

Due to my weight I'm thinking I'd rather have a steel frame like the Super Mirage.

Steel is perfectly fine. Some even claim it's real. A steel frame is not likely to be any stronger than an Al frame though. If it appeals to you aesthetically, and you don't mind the extra weight go for it, but at that price point it offers no real life advantage over an Al frame.

Do you think the Motobecane is a good value?

I've been checking craigslist and I have absolutely no idea if I'm getting screwed or not. This is way tougher than I anticipated. i've been searching continuously for the past three weeks and I'm becoming thoroughly exhausted and disenchanted with this "quest". I had no idea biking had so many layers involved.

Yep it is good value, especially if you are comfortable making minor adjustments with the help of Youtube videos. You need to get the right size though, so don't be afraid to call em up with your dimensions and get some advice.

I'm guessing the name was bought out of bankruptcy. But I also don't understand why it bothers people. Relatively few brands don't change hands and or corporate structure over time.

As I said...bikes on craigslist suck. They are not good values at all.

I wouldn't quite say that. Alu is a bit stiffer (due to larger diameters used) while steel has a bit more flex. Steel is stronger, but then for most people they aren't going to be pushing the limits of the frame. Only people who will push it are mountain and cyclocross bikers.

Casual cyclists IMO have way too many "Formula 1" elements in their bikes...

Ay Dios mio. Steel is stronger assuming identical tube thickness and diameter. But you can not assume that at all. In fact, you can assume that those factors will be different.

You might of said it, but it's hardly always true. Being patient can pay off big time on CL.

Craigslist in FL for me worked well (over 60% off for excellent condition 3 year old bike without a scratch, didn't need anything). I was only searching for a week. There were a ton of good deals at my time of purchase, but mine had the best fit.

I was originally planning on a BD bike, but I'm glad I went used. My $600 purchase will likely still be worth close to $600 next year.

craigslist can be great but you can't be in a hurry. I'm a mtber but wanted to find a cheapo road bike for every now and again rides and spent months watching craigslist before finally finding something good that was actually priced fairly. It is mostly walmart bikes with an occasional really high end bike with a very high end price to match around here. I was ready to buy a BD bike for around $400 but the one I wanted was out of stock.

Well, going through craigslist and trying to parse not only the right size bike (not all sellers think to list this) but the condition of it, what you need to replace, what to offer the seller, wading through it all, etc etc, it's a lot of time and effort.

It can be. But it can pay off quite nicely, too.

If you don't want to bother, that's doesn't bother me. And while there can be legitimate issues, I don't agree that "bikes on craigslist suck."
