Back on Bike after Surgery, yahoo
Today I was able to jump back on my bike after surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Wow I really have missed it. I waited months hoping that my knee would repair itself as often times happens. In my case it didn't. The surgery was a piece of cake, no real pain after it, I needed no post operative pills, but have had to wait an inordinate amount of time for the swelling to diminish. Physical therapy during the past week has done wonders and I heartily recommend it for anyone that has knee sugary, at least it has worked for me. My first ride today was only 9 tenths of a mile, but felt fantastic. Tomorrow I'll do around 3 miles. Ok that is it. I just had to shout out the wonderful feeling, the weather today was sunny as well.

Glad you're back at it.
I've had both knees done (2007 and 2010). I had a sports medicine doc do the surgery. My PT was to ride the bike on the trainer. He had me on the bike less than 8 hours after surgery. Started with 5 minutes, 3 times a day and worked up from there.
After 3 weeks I was up to almost an hour. Then he said I was good to go. My first ride (which included hills ) was about 18 miles. Gotta love those sports med docs.

I was/am mainly a year-round cycling commuter, 14 miles one-way. I got on a step through bike for a two mile hop in late September. In November I took a train to within about 4 miles of work and cycled the rest of the distance. By December I was doing the entire 14 miles, gradually recovered fitness, and back to 60 mile rides in the next summer. Even now, cycling is more comfortable than walking, or sitting for extended periods (at my job).
So I empathasize and celebrate your recovery.

Yes although my Doc said he rides quite a bit, IMO he isn't a sports doc. Having one would have likely provided a quicker recovery. PT wasn't started until after I complained of what I perceived to be a slower than expected recovery. Age , I'm sure plays a part in it as well. I'm into my 60's. In any case I'm very glad to be riding again, but the post operative procedure is the reason I started this thread, so others may be a little aggressive in pushing for Physical Therapy. That, and I just wanted to shout , I'm back on my bike

Yeah. In the ortho injuries I've had, I always sought out and went to a sports specialist orthopedic doc. They understand the importance of your activity and fitness to you and prescribe programs that get you back in action faster and with minimal loss of fitness.

Congrats. Glad to hear you are ready to go again. I crashed on July 24th and ended up having 5 hr. & 4 hr. surgeries to fuse C1 & C2. Got home in a brace and with lots of pain meds on Aug. 1st. Around mid-Nov. I was back on the trail and then on the road. I have an appreciation for what you're dealing with.

Bruce19: It is I that am happy for you. I don't think I experienced as much pain from the surgery as you, although recovering full range of motion is a slow process for me. Glad you are back on your bike so quickly and seem well. Good luck.

Nice!
Not fun being forced off the bike from injury. Recovery sucks, but at least you are riding a bike while recovering. I've had 2 knee surgeries and 1 back (to regain use of right leg). The mental part of recovery can be miserable; stick with it and good luck.
