    Bike storage on Mackinac Island

Planning a vacation for a week in Mackinac Island, MI where cars are not allowed. Would like to bring my own bike rather than using a rental but am wondering if anyone here has brought a bike to Mackinac island. Where did you store your bike overnight? The hotel says there are plenty of bike racks to lock it to. Is that what you did? Would it be safe there? I've never left my bike out overnight before in my life. I'm a lttile nervous about that. I have a forgetaboutit u-lock and cable. If anyone can share their experiences I would appreciate it. My bike is a 1999 Diamondback Crestview hybrid. Nothing special but it's valuable to me. I wouldn't want to lose it.

Never been to Mackinac Island, but in all my travels I always took my bike into my hotel room, even in midtown Manhattan, though they made me use the service elevator.
    Ride more. Fret less.

I have. Lock it outside. It'll be the only locked bike on the rack.

Mackinac island is a wonderful place. My wife and I spent a week there a few years ago. We rented one of the condos farther inland, and went everywhere by bike. I took my Croozer utility trailer to haul our luggage from the boat to our house, but one of the horse drawn taxis would take it for you if you're not equipped to carry it.
I don't think bike theft is much of an issue there.

Found a picture from our trip. This is how I handled the luggage transfer.

I agree. I've locked up my bike on the island, but it always seems I'm the only one. The paranoid city slicker.

Rode the island once on our tandem.
No cars means cyclists all over the road with most of them not knowing anything about road etiquette.
Disconcerting, especially in the crowded downtown area with tourists crisscrossing the roads without looking.

Also watch out for all that fresh horse manure!!!
Be aware there are emergency road vehicles on the island!

Agreed. Seems like it would be risky for a bike thief since he'd have to get the bike off the island and might be spotted at the ferry terminals or marinas.

I grew up in Mennonite country. Dodging road apples was how you developed bike handling skills.

I can't seem to locate it right now, but I remember seeing a video on YouTube of a rider that recorded while he rode around the island. IIRC, the worst offenders of not knowing what they were doing were not the kids but the adults.

If I can swing if financially, I may head up there for a few days this summer. Maybe go on a Thursday and come back home on a Sunday.

    ETA...found the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZ492frU_go

A week up there. Take a helmet and lock. I use to live in the area tourist drive the locals crazy but we sure do love your money Just a note I think you will need to buy a ticket to get your bike over to the island don't recall how much but I'm sure you checked that out.
