Hah, I conjured up something similar about the "American" way, though I put a more positive upspin on it. Personally, I like foreigners. Glad I'm not the only one thinking of that kind of thing...
More OT, I don't think I'd call it bullying but I've had misc. gate guards on base want me to get on the sidewalk coming in during the morning. Including today. I am in no way a hazard - lots of people bike on. I notice that it is more frequent when I ride my junky hybrid than my road bike, though that could be coincidence. There's bike lanes coming into Gate 1, but none at Gate 2 - which I live across the street from :/

I have no problem with foreigners... I must admit I enjoy seeing different cultures and how they do things.
It seems a lot of official folks regard bikes as some form of safety hazard. I remember using my bike to take a mostly empty can of propane/butane to the municipal tip and they wouldn't let me in because I wasn't driving a car. Apparently the poor folks driving cars around the place can't see cyclists.

I have people yelling stuff at me from cars all the time.
Like "Nice bike fa*" and "BIKE ARE FOR PUS**IES"
But today i went and did laundry and some guy was like "you bike people are all hippy commies and don't contribute to the economy" I asked the man to get away from me and then went into the bathroom to refill my water bottle from the sink.. when i came back out he was like "Oh, You people think you're so better than everyone"
Why do people not like bike riders..
A few days ago some teens where throwing bricks off a bridge just at bike riders..

Back in the day... when hippie's roamed north America........ many were actually members of the communist party. It was even considered common (although not as frequent as imagined) that many hippies lived in communes. The sharing of efforts and resources was central to the movement. The concept of a more free life-style... unencumbered from ambitious efforts and labors sounded very attractive to many.

We have a lot of people moving here to The County to get away from crowded cities & bad environments. Trouble is, they are crowding us out & bringing their issues with them. Somehow word got out we're a welfare state. I like our Gov & what he is trying to do....but this is a discussion for the political thread
Sadly, this isn't the Maine I grew up in.

I was on a club ride with about 15 riders and some dolt starts honking and yelling at us to get off the road. A block later we were all at a red light and one of our guys wheels up to him and says, "Hey! You are pretty cute!" and makes googly eyes at him. Priceless.

The nail that sticks out gets hammered back in. I've gotten compliments from people walking while on both my bicycles. Whereas when people are driving I seem to get a lot of flack. Ignorant people think the road is for cars only, and that they pay taxes for it... When we're just as much tax payers as they are if not more. We also don't damage the roads creating massive potholes everywhere we go. I also get flack when I'm on my motorcycle on the road by cars (but less on my motorcycle than when I'm on my bike). People also hate my car
Some 10+ years ago when I went to Driver's Education they stressed the importance of sharing the road with motorcyclists and bicyclists. "Share the Road" was an old phrase.

Personally I have no issues with male bicyclists wearing spandex, but I must admit that I enjoy more seeing the female cyclists in spandex.
BTW, I'm one of those people that think that you should have to take a physical and get a permit before being allowed to purchase spandex - and I include myself in the group that inhabits a spandex-free zone.

I love this guy's view on Spandex: Breaking the Cycle
Another favorite was when a driver yelled at me to get on the sidewalk (no pickup this time) and I didn't play it so cool and yelled back some obscenity. (I have decided since that my standard reply to this particular message will be, "I am not walking.") He slammed on the brakes and started lecturing me out his window about whatever thoughts were bouncing around his empty skull about cyclists, and he said I shouldn't be in the road. I told him that state law says that a bicycle is a vehicle, and I have the right to be on the road. He said he had his CDL (trying to impress me I am sure) and that he knows that bikes don't belong on the road. I wish I had the presence of mind to tell him that his stopping in the middle of the road was impeding my progress, but I didn't. Shortly he started to drive off slowly, and so did I, staying behind him. He slammed on his brakes, whether to scare me or have me run into his back end I don't know, but when I stopped, I finally got him with a good line. "That sir, is assault!" After a few seconds, and not saying a word, he drove off...
I would rather deal with idiots nd their verbal issues than with the people who throw things, or that are so oblivious that they pull out in front of me.

Whenever I'm waiting at a red light in my car, and some dickhead on a bike rides up alongside me, glances both ways (maybe), then stands up on his pedals and powers through the intersection against the light, I think to myself "That's why I get harassed when I'm riding". There's jerks on both sides of the aisle.
