begginger bicycling questions

Hey everyone I have some questions regarding bicycling for weight loss I did my first long ride ( well long to me lol) ride yesterday and it felt great found a nice bike trail here in Ohio and decided why not today I am sore as can be which I honestly wademt expecting to much seeing I just completed a round of p90x I figured my legs would be a little stronger...nope lol its a good feeling though

I am looking to continue doing my p90x strength training workouts and replacing my cardio with bike riding I am still overweight so my goal is to ride to build endurance and lose weight do you guys recommend going biking every other day like m,w,f, and maybe one more day on the weekend or what ? Below is what I did on my first ride I know it is not much but I'm sure it will get better overtime. I was planning on going to the same check point for my first few rides until it gets easier because that ride was defiantly a workout lol I think the trail goes for 13.5 miles one way so until then I have a lot to build up to

The trail is all flat except for the bridge at the start is a big incline.

Below is my ride info

Trip 4/24/2014
average speed: 11.7 mph
maximum speed: 20.3 mph
distance: 13.29 mi
ride time: 01:08:03
total time: 01:09:19
start time: 4/24/14 1:42:42 PM
end time: 4/24/14 3:05:01 PM
time from start: 01:22:19

Riding every other day for an hour is a great strategy! Gradually increase your length of time in the saddle, covering greater distances. Eventually, you'll be riding almost daily. I've found that riding daily has much more of an effect upon weight loss, muscle building, and endurance, than the occasional long ride.

You can get a bit more exercise by pressing the period key after each sentence.

3-4 days a week is good. Listen to your body. Rest when it tells you to. Don't get too hung up on a schedule.

I am curious about your ride stats. As I read down the list, a question arose... (only relevant entries listed)

Ride time: Probably time in motion

Total time: Probably time in motion plus any time stopped

Time from start: Easily computed from start and end time, but shouldn't it be the same as total time?

I assume my assumption on Total time is wrong... so what is Total time?

Honestly I'm not sure little Darwin. that's the way my cycle comp spits it out I've no clue why its about a minute off was wondering the same thing myself I pause the counter when I stop to break that's why my ride time is 68 min. my time from start to finish is 82ish minutes

I totally agree, except over the years I found 40 minutes to be adequate, wether I was swimming, walklin' the treadmill or biking. YMMV.

In reading this, I think I have a possible answer to the question. Perhaps the small difference between ride time and total time is the time stopped while it wasn't manually paused. That would explain why it is so close to the ride time, with a larger gap that time from start...

OK cool maybe my goal is to get my time down and my distance farther . I like riding my bike and the scenery here is amazing.

I'm trying to figure out the best seat for me now because on the way home yesterday that was what slowed me down the most lol. Still trying to learn all the basics and it doesn't help that I'm 270 lb lol
