I've heard a couple of plans floated (including one by an alderman who later admitted she hadn't really thought it through), but nothing firm. My guess is it would cost more than it would bring in, and have limited benefit. That goes for any municipality, not just ones like Chicago with more pressing matters at hand.

A stupid idea, especially since many, if not most, cyclists also drive cars and support street infrastructure through car-related taxes and fees.

you are right. it would make as much sense as trying to charge everybody for road usage by the mile. just another example, if it's even real, of politicians trying to save their jobs by saving THEIR constituency money at the expense of other constituencies

i hate politics...

If you pay any sort of tax on gas, you already are being charged for road usage by the mile. Although in our case, the excise on fuel goes into consolidated revenue.

I think some cities have what they call a wheel tax, you have to have a sticker on your car showing you have paid the tax in order to use their streets. The city I live in floated the idea but didn't pass it.

Again, with at least a half a dozen murders in Chicago every week, do they need cops checking cyclist and little Suzie for a tag on their bikes? A license on a bike is a total waste of police time, and a real can of worms.

Cant you see some Chicago cop cuffing little Susie and running her in for no tag on her bike?????

I heard somewhere that someplace is going to tag or cuff all unlicensed recumbent riders using public streets for being public nuisances and/or eyesores?

Is that true?

Chicago is having a hard time getting motorcyclists to pay their city vehicle tax, this would be even harder.

The idea is being floated out there and it is Chicago so if they can tax it they probably will. They need the revenue as usual.
