    Paint or fiber cracks?

Are scratches underneath the front fork near the top of the tire, scratches from the rock and debris that circulates through the fork while riding, or fractures in the fiber? Upside down and through the hole where you can see the brake mounting shaft, the cracks don't seem to go all the way through—they seem superficial. I know, I could take it in, and pay the LBS to check it, but the veterans here should know if these are common "scratches".

    Thanks, Pete

All I see is a few scuffs. That area isn't in a high-stress location; so it's not where I'd normally look for cracks. A crack would show as a hairline, and you could probably feel it with a fingernail. And based on the location, if I did see something, it would expect it to radiate from the hole, not run along the tire's path.

Even while on a 100 mile ride, all I can think about the entire time is the dirt that is building up underneath the fork. I need help.

Thanks BlazingPedals, it's good to know it's not a high-stress location.

Fenders would help. Of course, then dirt builds up on the underside of the fender.

to me it does not look like carbon damage, but if your really concerned about it then its probably worth the 6 bucks your lbs will charge you to look at it in person. we can only tell so much from a photo on a screen.

Oh, I thought the thermal imaging method would have been more expensive than that. Cool, thanks of the info...
