ROFLMAO insert photo of three legged rabbit on crutches with protest sign against cyclist on the MUP....

Don't worry, Bugs was likely dead within the time it would have taken you to stop and try to locate him and wring his neck.

Rabbits have a self defense mechanism and are easily killed, they can actually die of freight due to shock and high pulse rate.

A rabbit can actually go "tharn" freeze in place and die in hope of avoiding being seen by a predator.

Don't feel bad, but the least you could do is put up a little cross at that spot like folks do on the highway...

I ran over a squirrel a few weeks back... he made a suicide dash... I was just thankful he did not go into my spokes. He lived, for the moment anyways.

P.S. also not quite sure how advocating compassion for animals entails misanthropy. One of us must be conceptually confused methinks.
It's the being mean and nasty to people part that may be emblematic of misanthropy, genius.

Chase that injured animal down here and you'd run the risk of getting bitten by a rattlesnake. Huge portions of the bike path here are covered in deep vegetation on both sides. I quite often see rattlesnakes when I ride early in the morning..

I would not suggest running after an injured animal into thick brush / vegetation wielding a u-lock. I suppose you can also bash the rattlesnakes head in after it bites you..

Absolutely no chance you'd catch it anyway. Would be a fool's errand.

If it had to drag itself off the trail, I bet the OP could have caught up with it.

Which is precisely why your comment amounted to nothing more than trolling. Why else - other than this juvenile and anti-social motivation - would you take the time to post such a comment. There has been after all, nothing mean or nasty in anything I've said here. Too easy to throw baseless insults around and simultaneously marvel at your own "wit", perhaps?

Your attempt to derail the thread, and the abundance of black humour in other posts does not however disguise the fact that ultimately we're talking about some elementary moral principles here, such as taking responsibility for your own actions, and minimising harm and suffering to other sentient creatures.

From the thread title, I thought the OP might have lost a leg. Whew.

All my experience leads me to believe otherwise. Escaping animals, even severely injured, are pretty incredible in their ability to evade capture by humans.

The other day, I was riding along and a rabbit was by the side of the bike path. So I gave him a couple feet of room, figuring I'd whiz by like I always do. Rabbit got his signals crossed and ran straight into my front wheel. He got his leg caught in the spokes and lost it. Poor critter. Last I saw, he was pulling himself into the woods with his front legs, minus a back leg.

So if there are small animals where you ride, give them a wide berth. These creatures don't always think rationally, and if they make a mistake and run into your path it could be disaster for both of you.
OP; Rabbits and squirrels reproduce so prolifically that the world can tolerate the loss of one or the several hundred thousand road kills a year. However trying to whiz by one on a bike is not a good idea. Better to slow way down as you approach, go as wide as possible around it, and then return to your normal speed. Like most prey animals, rabbits have evolved to have a wide range of hide / flee skills which are not predictable and are not bike friendly. In these incidents, the rabbit is injured or dies, but the biker and his bike often takes a serious bashing also.

Hope that helps
/K

Take up hunting, control rabbit population through a predator/prey relationship to replace the lack of other predators in the area and have fresh meat after the ride.

Did you end up finding the rabbit and killing it eventually?

OP, you are not a bad guy for letting the wounded rabbit escape. Nature takes care of such unfortunate accidents by allowing the animal to heal and function with three legs (yes, this happens; rabbits caught in traps often chew off the ensnared leg to escape), or by allowing it to die quickly or by providing it as food for another critter. Nature has a plan for all of the accidents its wild creatures endure; things get screwed up only when we humans interfere.
