There's no penalty for hitting a cyclist so why pay attention. I find that knocking off the mirror generally gets their attention.

Adding bright lights worked in my case, otherwise too many people would look at me but not react to my being in their way.

Running a bright white front blinkie during the day can help, IMO. There's a guy I see around here on occasion who rides a really low slung trike and runs a bright front blinky. It catches my eye long before his silhouette would. If you're riding a bent, you're likely lower to the ground and present a smaller area to oncoming drivers so are perhaps a bit less likely to intrude into their awareness.
