Be a careful shopper when shopping between Nashbar & Performance

I know that many of simply wait for promotions prior to shopping, but I noted today there can be a considerable difference in non-sale prices between Nashbar & Performance. Most of you probably know that the two companies are owned by the same organization. I just received the latest catalogs from both, and noticed that the Topeak Hexus multi-tool is $24.95 in the Performance catalog & $19.95 in the Nashbar. A 25% difference in price for a non-sale item is rather a huge discrepancy. Shop carefully!

Yes, and when you can, always consider supporting your local bike shop. You will often find little to no savings at the "big box" stores. While trying to price some items this weekend, I was surprised at the extent of the markup on some items.

I've checked many times and found that my LBS has prices that are about the same as on-line prices. I may occasionally pay $1-2 more for an item but the LBS has saved me ten times that. Their good advice has often kept me from buying the wrong items.

Skydive, both of those companies will do a price match. So if you are placing an order at Nashbar and see an item at Performance for less, just call them and mention it. They'll match prices of any online vendor provided that it is an exact item. Price matching Nashbar's cork bar tape with Performance's cork bar tape won't work.

I've saved considerable piles of the long green by purchasing through online vendors and ebay.

What kills me is the dang shipping at Nashbar

On a low-medium priced item, i can just ride to my lbs, and in most odds, it will end up being cheaper.

You are preaching to the choir about supporting the LBS. I mentioned the other day in front of some riders, a couple of whom apparently worked for an LBS, that I got a top tube bag from Nashbar. I got an immediate lecture about supporting the shop. I asked if they stock a like bag or ever have, to which they not unsurprisingly replied in the negative. If they want support - stock the stuff!

Skydive, keeping a large inventory is extraordinarily expensive and often leads to the financial downfall of a shop. If not in a desperate hurry consider asking your LBS shop to get it for you. But we are rapidly becoming a Walmart world. The guys with big money are often unbeatable and it is likely a losing battle.

Our Performance will price match and take the cheapest price wherever the product is. They even said they'd price match their competitors. When in doubt, you can always head in to your nearest Performance shop (if there's one in your area, of course).

I hope Nashbar opens a shop in Indianapolis. That way I too can say "I support my local bike shop", even though all they sell are foriegn products.

Be careful what you wish for. The Nashbar stores I've seen aren't like the Performance stores I've seen. A Performance store is like a sporting goods store, with aisles and aisles of stuff. A Nashbar store is more like a regular LBS, which just happens to have Nashbar-branded stuff. Between the two, the Performance model can compete better in today's marketplace. One disadvantage of having a local outlet, the catalog has to then charge the state's income tax on all catalog orders to customers in that state.

Well Performance then. That sounds like a better option.

The sales tax thing really stinks because our new governor that swore up and down that he wasn't going to raise sales taxes is going to do just that - raise sales taxes. There are a few people in town (mostly politicans) that belive the Indianapolis Colts need a new stadium, even though their current stadium isn't very old.

There can also be substantial price differences between Performance's catalog, on-line, and retail stores. One case was a jersey that was $29 in the store, and $59 on-line!

I am lucky enough to have both a SuperGo and a Performance store in my area, so in a way they are the LBS.

As for paying someone to work on my bike I have a great shop just down the street. If the bike needs parts I order them through the LBS that is doing the work.

Performance store here with online or catalog deals by Nashbar, SuperGo and Coloradocyclist.

Sigh.... thrice in the last three weeks I went to the LBS and the doors were shut, during normal posted hours. I ended up going to a local Trek superstore and two different Performance stores... Of course, they only carry the fast moving stuff, so I still resorted going to an on-line shop for Campy cables.

But I always started with the LBS (locked doors) each time.

The local Performance shops have even limited bike lines now... Giant, Basso, and Fuji. I hope this "corporatization" of the bike world doesn't end up giving cyclists nothing to chose from except Brand X or Brand X.

It's not just the corporatization of the LBS. It's the corporatization of the entire country. Bike shops just happen to be behind the times. Other industries (banking, grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, etc.) have been that way for decades.

Yeah pretty amazing when you go from town to town and the strip malls all look the same... same logos, same shapes, same menus...

I just finished complaining to Performance yesterday. As a "Team Performance" member, I am supposed to be upgraded to 2 day shipping at no extra charge. Since the Carnac shoes I ordered ended up being a back order, Performance automatically changed the shipping method to USPS. I saw last Wednesday they had shipped and was jazzed that I would be able to test out my new Carnac Heliums that weekend. Alas, I didn't receive them until the following Tuesday. Performance didn't really care.
