I think this attitude comes from riding with the wrong people. If neither you nor your riding mates feel they have anything to prove, everyone can have a better time.

I ride with my wife, while I am typically the stronger rider we've been riding enough together that she has gotten much stronger. There are times that I will make her lead, she feels she needs to press a bit and does. She has a well equipped bike and gear that she needs. These are required if you expect her to keep up at all.
What is her fitness level? Is she coming off the couch and onto the bike or does she exercise on a routine basis? What happens if you are the slow one?
