Has anyone made a chain tensioner?

Hi. I'm a 14yr old, designing a chain tensioner for a bicycle, for my GCSE in design and tech. Has anyone got any ideas on the best materials to use and why? has anyone tried to make a chain tensioner and encountered any problems?

I've made one out of an old derailuer (sp? it's early ) but not from scratch. As for materials I wouls assume CNC Al would be the best. Have you looked at the ones on the market? I think the Surly singulator is as simple as it gets.

This is the one I have. As for a diagram I just locked the derailuer with a piece of shifter cable and the limit screws. I didn't like it, it put too much pressure on the chain.

You might want to look at this one too

hope this helps.
