Has anyone made a chain tensioner?

Hi. I'm a 14yr old, designing a chain tensioner for a bicycle, for my GCSE in design and tech. Has anyone got any ideas on the best materials to use and why? has anyone tried to make a chain tensioner and encountered any problems?

I've made one out of an old derailuer (sp? it's early ) but not from scratch. As for materials I wouls assume CNC Al would be the best. Have you looked at the ones on the market? I think the Surly singulator is as simple as it gets.

Great. Thanks for your help. Got any pictures or can you draw me a diagram. Sorry, I know it's early over there!

This is the one I have. As for a diagram I just locked the derailuer with a piece of shifter cable and the limit screws. I didn't like it, it put too much pressure on the chain.

You might want to look at this one too

    hope this helps.

You also might try posting something in the SS/Fixed forum. Guys there are more up on this stuff than I.
