After putting his wheel in his mouth and telling French reporters that Paris deserves to host the 2012 Olympics, six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will backpedal his way through Central Park today to prove he really loves New York.

Armstrong's latest ride — call it the "Tour de Penance" — is intended to show that he supports New York's bid to host the 2012 Summer Games.


The Texas-born cycling star has been trying to make amends for his faux pas ever since he told reporters in France that Paris "deserves" to host the Olympics — causing an international furor in the process. Now the cycling phenom is planning to sweat out his miscue — literally — by riding the park with avid recreational cyclist Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff and a pack of kids in a city program for aspiring bicycle racers.

"Six-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong to show his support for New York's Olympic Bid," roared a press release yesterday from NYC2012.

Doctoroff, the founder of the city's Olympic bid, was quick to open his arms to Armstrong. "He called me up and was extremely apologetic and told me that what he said was taken out of context," Doctoroff said. "He's truly an American hero." Armstrong and Doctoroff will be joined by Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and kids from the city's Star Track cycling program. "I haven't been riding much this winter," Doctoroff admitted. "I'll do the best I can to keep up with him for a few yards."

Armstrong was vilified as a "weasel" and mocked in The Post for siding with France by saying, "To be honest, I think Paris deserves the games."

A day later, after causing a tempest in a velodrome, the cycling star reversed course and declared that his heart was with New York all the way. "If I were on the selection committee, I would be rolling for New York City," the repentant road racer claimed. Armstrong's comments came while the International Olympic Committee's evaluation commission was in Paris, about a week after the panel visited New York.

New York, Paris, London, Madrid and Moscow are vying to host the 2012 games. The IOC will pick a winner during a July 6 vote in Singapore.

The six-mile loop around Central Park pales in comparison to the winding roads through the Pyrenees mountains, but Armstrong will likely find a better reception here than what he was used to in his early entries in the Tour de France. French fans at one time spat on Armstrong, and he received death threats before a 2004 time trial.

Armstrong, a cancer survivor, has cycled in New York before, including a 2002 bike-athon that raised $50,000 for research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Personally, I think it would be nice for NYC to host the olympics.
But if we're gonna be all spoiled about it...f*ck it, maybe we don't deserve a bid.

What a sh*tty piece of "journalism". Last I checked, Lance was a hero to most of America. The fact that he doesn't order "freedom fries" doesn't change that.

It is the NY Post, not a basition of professional and accurate journalism there. Besides, Paris has been better to Lance then NYC.

Journalists/reporters are pretty worthless in the US. Stuff like this doesn't even phase me anymore. If they can't manage to put some rediculous spin on a story, it isn't worth writing for them and their publishers.

When I lived in the NY area, the NY Post was known as the newspaper for people who moved their lips as they read.

NYpost is a joke, i'd rather read dumb tabloids about batboy than the nypost. They are the most biased 'paper' in the world and the writing reads like a dumd child's journal entry. I have no respect for the new york post. Its always amazing to me why people would read sh*t like that. the daily news isn't much better either.

It wasn't necessary for him to do all that crap. I don't even think he needed to elaborate on his remark. People simply can't be that stupid, can they?

The Post is certaily sh*t, but this is the first time I've ever heard anyone call it "journalism"!

That's not reading, that's trying to figure out the story from the pictures

They kinda don't read it; the paper has lost money for at least five years, but is propped up by the same "professional journalists" who bring you Fox

The NY Post has been a trash paper, just above tabloid trash for as far back as I can remember.
We always got a chuckle out of it when taking the A train to school.

The post writes at an 8th grade reading level, the daily news at a 10th grade level. I thought it was much lower, but I guess education really is going down the toilet.

1. The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the country.
2. The Washington Post is read by people who think they run the country.
3. The New York Times is read by people who think they should run
the country and who are very good at crossword puzzles.
4. USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run the country
but don't really understand The New York Times. They do, however, like
their statistics shown in pie charts.
5. The Los Angeles Times is read by people who wouldn't mind running
the country -- if they could find the time -- and if they didn't have
to leave Southern California to do it.
6. The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used to run
the country and did a far superior job of it, thank you very much.
7. The New York Daily News is read by people who aren't too sure
who's running the country and don't really care as long as they can get
a seat on the train.
8. The New York Post is read by people who don't care who'srunning the
country as long as they do something really scandalous, preferably
while intoxicated.
9. The Miami Herald is read by people who are running another country
but need the baseball scores.
10. The San Francisco Chronicle is read by people who aren't surethere
is a country ... or that anyone is running it; but if so, they oppose
all that they stand for. There are occasional exceptions if the
leaders are handicapped minority feminist atheist dwarfs who also
happen to be illegal aliens from any other country or galaxy provided,
of course, that they are not Republicans.
11. The National Enquirer is read by people trapped in line at the
grocery store.
12. None of these are read by the guy who is running the country into
the
ground.

Faux pas? He was expressing an opinion.... he spends a lot of time in France.... he thought Paris was the best candidate for 2008 but was beaten by Beijing, perhaps not for the best of reasons. He says "A few days ago, I went past the Stade de France and I think it would really be a great place for the opening ceremony. Paris is one of the world's legendary cities."

Anyone seriously disagree with him? Does this statement make him a traitor, or are the people who think this just in fact dicks?


Besides, since 1984, the USA has hosted the Summer Olympics twice already... and had two goes at the Winter Olympics since 1980 as well... perhaps it's fair to let others have a go?
