New (used) Huffy, looking for information
 

First time posting here, let me know if this belongs in a different category.

I am going to college, and for the first time will be staying here all summer (want to graduate and all) so I decided to get me a cheap bike to ride to class and wherever. Something dirt cheap and simple. I have an alright mountain bike waaay back at the parent's place (good thinking bringing it up here, right?) but don't want to spend the money to ship it here. I want something "beaterer" anyways, and simpler. I scoured the local thrift store market to no avail, then found a decent used bike at a sporting goods store.

It says it is a Huffy Omni-10, and in my uninformed estimation is an 80's era entry-level roadbike. It is in great working order, with new tires. I have ridden off-road and on-road most of my life, but always on mountain bikes, so this is something new to me. It rides smoothly, and handles well as far as I can tell, taking little effort to get up to good speed. I am more on the medium height side, and this bike is not quite as tall as a lot of the roadbikes I have been around, though it has 26 inch wheels. So far it is great for zipping around campus with little hassle. It looks nice, but dated and not valuable in my eyes compared to most other bikes on the racks, which was my plan all along.

My question is, does anyone happen to know anything about this bike? As with everything I buy, I try to find all the info I can on it, because I am odd that way, and so far have turned up only some passing references to the model on the internet. Thanks a lot guys, I have enjoyed cruising these forums.

Don't know much about them except they appear to be the lowest end bike K-mart carry here. Plenty of them around town which doesn't mean much except that they're cheap. If they last on our goat tracks, they might not be that bad.

I had one as my first road bike when I was 11. All blue, even the saddle and tires were blue, so was the faux leather grips. It was decent, if cared for. The rims were prone to rusting because they were steel. Heavy too. Stem mounted shifters were sluggish. I had it for 6 years until my Dad aquired a Paramount from county impound. I have a no clue what happened to it...

Keep looking around, you may be able to find a better deal.

How much do they want for the Huffy, anyway?

When we get those bikes donated to the co-op we either ship them to Haiti or scrap them for the steel.
Steel rims are not very safe.
Fit is important to pay attention to when purchasing any bike (new or used).
Check out websites that discuss fit and take a tape measure with you when bike shopping.
I would recommend a bike frame with a 3-pc bb.
I know you want to go cheap but I would not spend any money on a huffy with steel rims.
Spring is here and garage/yard sales will start soon.

I would look for an old cruiser or even a newer one. Should be easy to find in a college town. I bet you could sell it wen you graduate and get a rack for beer. ;)
