I just won auction for Saris Bones 2 bike rack on ebay for $96, which includes shipping and insurance. I have been doing some checking and it looks like the average price for this rack without shipping is $104 without shipping. I did see one place where the price was $84 without shpping but that was way down in AZ. I am here is PA so unless I wanted to pay for air frieght, I would have to wait several days. The one I purchased is just in NY.

Has anybody seen a better price on this rack?

Portis 04-09-05 02:36 PM

Pricepoint has one for $84 plus shipping.

Here is one on Ebay for $95 shipped.

Looks like you did ok as long as it was new.

spinnaker 04-09-05 03:26 PM

Yep it was new in box. Looks like I could have done just a little better on shipping at Pricepoint but they estimated 8-9 days shipping. It's probably coming from the West.

The dude / duete is charging $15 for ground shipping. A bit steep IMHO.

If you won the auction, you're obligated to buy it. Some people try to make money on shipping. But some just go to the local package shop and pass on the charged price. Those shops often charge a premium compared to the large discount warehouses who get super low bulk rates. If the shipping charge was stated up front, then you knew what you were getting into. If not you might ask why it's so high. But you can't force the person to go out of their way to find a cheaper drop off depot.

I never said I was not going to buy it. And yes I knew the cost of the shipping when I bid on it, I'm not stupid. I calculated shipping into my max bid price. It really didn't matter if he / she charged a penny for the product but $84 in shipping. What matters is the final amount.

I was just curious as to why a $15 charge. It could be that it does cost this much for a non bulk shipper.

that's a pretty good price, you may been able to do better but not by much.
I have the three bike version and am very happy with it.

$96+$15shipping=$111, You should have been able to get one at a local shop for $120 and they would have out it on the car.

Thank you Ranger. Yes total price paid was $96 so if I purchased it locally it would be $120 + 7% sales tax, plus my LBS nor Dick's carried the 2 bike version.

I've never seen the used Bones racks go for any less than the new ones at places like Pricepoint. I've never figured that out.

Rev.Chuck 04-10-05 07:59 PM

Whoops. Another nail in the coffin at any rate.

spinnaker 04-10-05 08:05 PM

The rack is brand new in box.

Regardless of what anyone else thinks, if you're happy, that's all that matters. One piece of advice, get a locking hitch pin and a small lock from WM (or your favorite hardware store). Racks have a way of disappearing if they aren't securely attached to your receiver.

spinnaker 04-11-05 04:15 PM

This is a bumper hitch, any ideas of how to secure that? I would assume that if the trunk is locked someone would need to cut the straps to remove it?

larue 04-11-05 05:50 PM

no way to secure it that I can tell, but on any bike rack your bike is pretty easy to steal if someone wants it.
that's why I don't leave my bike out in the open for very long.

From the following web site:

Saris recommends the #981, Hardened Steel, Locking Cable (sold seperately) for locking racks and bike to vehicle. This adds security and piece of mind.
