Shortly after I bought my titanium bicycle ... Rowan got one too.
We bought our Thorn touring bicycles at the same time.
We bought our Bike Fridays at the same time.
It's the same with all the gear, equipment, kit, etc. Rowan talks about getting a jacket ... we both end up getting jackets. I talk about getting shoes ... we both end up getting shoes.

The same people who would buy a $6500 bundle to get leather seats or a radio with more complicated controls for their car will never understand how, much less why, someone would spend more than $300 for a bicycle.
I usually say "This one is for off road, this one is for commuting, this lawn chair one is for sight seeing, and that one is for running the dog." Grossly oversimplified half truths, but adaquate most of the time. It kills me to call a full custom allroad randonnuer a commuter bike, but even cyclists don't get that one. Fortunately my bikes all look very different.

I have a friend who is BAD like that. "Hey I'm looking at this new car" "Oh yeah? How much" "$350 a month", "Umm, but what's the actually purchase price". "I dunno. But they said they could sell it to me for $350 a month"
Yikes.
But seriously, every time I've bought a car I've heard that line, whether I'm financing or not. "Add this option, it's only $X a month!"

I'm brand new to this. And already I have people confused as to why I bought a $500 bike (low end by the standards around here), when Wal-Mart has bikes for $150. The depth of their understanding is bicycle=bicycle. All the same, why spend more?
But then, before I got into this all I thought the difference was, was weight. No idea about component quality and overall build quality. Fit, performance, reliability, etc. And there are plenty of things that leave me scratching my head that others just swear by. I have a $20 coffee maker in my office. Makes "5 cups" of coffee, which means it fills my coffee mug twice. Perfect! But some people swear by $150 Keurigs that do the same job. I buy Arizona brand jeans for $30 or so. And some people just can't do anything less than a $200 pair of designer jeans.
And I have a $1,200 MacBook Pro when people tell me their $199 wal-mart special laptop is "just as good".
Funny world isn't it! We all have the things we'll spend money on, and the things we'd never dream of splurging on. Yet we forget all of that when we see someone spend a lot on something we'd never spend a lot on!

I also have an older female friend who was telling me about some shoes she got on sale for $800, but calls me a child for spending so much money on my "toys".
Funny world we live in.

I'm an avid cyclist who enjoys a variety of riding experiences and challenges. I have a commuter/gravel/touring bike...for commuting (necessary reality), gravel riding (fun), and touring (dream). I have a road bike to go fast and enjoy recreational rides with friends. and I have a fixie to navigate a city with ease and convenience and to enjoy the challenges/benefits that come with fixed/ss riding.

I guess I'm a minimalist. I look at my two current bikes, and think that they'll likely be all I ever need in the way of bicycles for the rest of my life. While I do like to try out different things; having tried a few different bikes over the years, I think I've fouind the sweet spot- at least I hope so, because now that I've been spoiled, the only direction left to go is up$$$, and I believe that I already have more invested in bikes than is necessary....
