I've reached the 200 km point now ... just over 200 km of walking this year so far!
There wasn't as much walking after that delightful day on March 11, which I talked about above. Unfortunately I fell ill ... stomach flu, cold, respiratory issues ...
Between then and this past Sunday, I only covered 9.6 km ... mostly my commute.
However, I'm building back up again this week ...
Sunday -- 1.2 km (short walk with friends)
Monday -- 3.9 km (commute + walk back to work from uni)
Tuesday -- 6.5 km (commute + walk back to work from uni + lovely walk to beach)
Wednesday -- 6.2 km (commute + energetic walk to neighbouring beach)

We've finally got our canoe now too ... so we might start cross-training by canoeing soon too.

Sunday -- we accidentally did a 11.7 km hike today.
We were planning to go canoeing, now that we've got our canoe, but it was too rough out there. So then we decided to go for a little walk instead. The original plan was to drive to the start of the trail, and then to hike the 6 km return trip. But as we left the house, we decided we could probably walk there.
Before we knew it ... 11.7 km done!

I just started riding last summer. I got a couple bikes from neighbors sheds and fixed them up nice, one is a '64 Miyata 310 and the other a nineties hybrid I set up as a commuter.
I'm not a walker but I'm a "barefoot" runner. Just like I got the bikes for free, I made my running huaraches. Some 1/4" rubber sheeting and paracord and off I go! Did 45 minutes the other day, my longest time out so far!
It's a great compliment to the biking, when my butt's tender from a long ride, go run, calves sore from running, take the bike out.
Both are cross training for my HEMA practice, which works my core and upper body. I just want more wind, the grappling will tire you out in minutes.

I have actually eased back on my weekly totals a little bit because we haven't been going for an after-work walk on Mondays and Tuesdays. I walk a bit more during the day on those days and those days are generally quite stressful. By the time I get home, I'm tired. Also I haven't needed to do my longish morning walk on Fridays.
Easing back has been good for my arthritis, but I could use a little more activity in there somewhere.
We almost went snowshoeing this weekend. Unfortunately/fortunately the snow melted ... unfortunately we weren't able to snowshoe, but fortunately we were able to ride.

Now that the weather is nice enough that I can ride 5 days per week, I haven't been going for walks. Although...I still walk plenty, just doing chores around my place- i.e. going to get the mail= 1/4 mile walk; etc. Bet I still walk at least a mile on an average day.

We keep hoping to get some canoeing in, but it might end up being closer to spring before that happens. The weather has just not been nice.

Anytime my wife and i go somewhere together we walk, She has asthma so she is afraid of riding bike any real distance. Its about half a mile to the grocery store, 3/4 of a mile to the library. That said, i don't like walking anymore than i have to. My primary mode of exercise/transport now is cycling.

Just saw this thread. Wife and I have been walking since 2010 when we walked the Walt Disney World Family Fun Run 5K, the start of Marathon Weekend in January. This past January she only walked the 10K, usually she would do the half marathon but last year she and daughter got bumped way too many times so no more WDW Half but will still walk the Celebration Half Marathon which is 2 weeks after Disney.
Myself, being the more energetic biker that I am, I started Chi Walking-Danny Dreyer after having done that 2010 5K. This past January I completed another Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend Dopey Challenge, starts on Thursday with a 5K, Friday a 10K, Saturday a half marathon and Sunday a full Marathon. On another forum I frequent, a poster brought up the challenge of a palindrome event so I followed the full marathon with a half marathon on Monday morning starting at 3AM, then a 10K on the Disney cruise ship Tuesday morning and a 5K Wednesday with wife on Disney's Castaway Cay. 7 days=71 miles + another 9 miles late Wednesday and Thursday back on ship then 10 days later the Celebration Marathon for 106+ miles in January.
Chi Walking minimizes knee pressure and allows for rapid cadence, in my case up to 220 steps per minute for an under 7 minute/mile pace for short sprinting. Best walking half marathon was 2:11:10 at a 10mpm pace and marathon of 4:56:48. The Chi Walking method has a mid-sole strike so no locked knee or shock from heel contact and by using a forward lean, gravity assists.
Having been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, I walked in our 12 hour overnight Venice, FL. Relay For Life last month doing 32.5 miles which is half my age come July.
After wife retires this August, we have the Space Coast Half Marathon in November, Marathon Weekend next January and then we will be looking for events around the country where we can walk 5K to half marathon distances.

I've been fighting some neck/shoulder issues after 20 years of working at a desk. All was good until this summer. Well, before then I had the odd tightness or discomfort, sometimes on the bike, but nothing that ever kept my attention.
I've made a lot of changes (desk, posture, stretching, icing, etc.) and have visited the physiotherapist and now a chiropractor. Despite a lot of 'work', the past few weeks I'm at a point where it's better than the worst it's been, but no where close to where I was a year or two ago. I now have really range of motion, so I'm not impeded in any way, but I find that any activities where I'm sitting, or using my arms a lot (or both -- cycling ) , leaves me with enough discomfort to take away from enjoying things. One hour rides have been fine. Much longer and I feel it. Trouble is when I'm more sore than normal the day or two after...can't be certain if it was the ride, or posture issues in the office.
Anyway...sorry for the rant, reason I'm posting here is I've never had any issues when walking/hiking. So as I continue to work through the neck issues, I have hiking and walking on the back of my mind as alternatives...hopefully not permanently. But that said, it's possible that my cycling might be limited going forward. Since having this neck problem, I've been doing some hikes, and a few walks. I like hiking. Walking around my neighbourhood isn't exciting. But if I could do no other exercise I would do it with a more positive attitude.
There are some great things about hiking - still enough equipment needed that if you like buying things (I do...a bit), there is the equipment aspect to enjoy; I like photography and this fits well on many hikes; I like planning/maps and again this works with hiking trails; I love nature. There isn't much about hiking I don't like, but I like cycling about 5x better (the workout, the feel of being on the bike...you probably all know what I'm talking about). And you can plan the big hikes.
There are fewer things I like about walking (I'm referring to tramping around paved paths, sidewalks around where I live) - so simple to get ready and start walking from your front door, little equipment needed, I feel great after. My main issue is that I crave fitness, and after a 1.5hr bike ride I feel like I've had a great workout, less so with a 1.5hr walk. In a similar vein, I have to spend more time walking to get an equal workout, and this becomes difficult on walks before work, or on evenings. I have a young family so time is precious.
I'm an easily motivated person when I read something...like people's blogs, books, or watch movies on the subject. There is a lot out there on hiking. But I haven't found much that interests me on walking...I would welcome your references!
Thanks for reading!

I'm an avid walker who just turned into an avid biker My original goal was 1000 mi this year, but after January (and I walked in some 15-20 degree F days, too), I realized I was aiming too low. So my goal is 1200 miles and I've walked 686 mi as of yesterday.
Edit: Maintenance calories are right at 2950 or so which is quite high for my 48 year old, 160# frame, and the walking (and now the riding) has a lot to do with that.
