Riding to eat pizza, yes. Retrieving a pizza seems silly. Time wise maybe you can beat the driver, but I don't know why you'd want to. It'll be cold and I won't want to eat it right off the bike. When they hand it to you, why not just eat it there?

Of course the pizza delivery arms race foreseen in "Snow Crash" has not yet come to pass, and instead the 30 minute guarantee went away.

If you want pizza that bad why not just make it yourself? Pizza shops inflate the costs to about three to four times what it costs to make it at home.

Pizza dough is dead simple to make if you have a small bread mixer. I'll make a batch, portion it into 5 oz dough balls, put two in th efridge and freeze the rest. I make a better pizza than any chain delivery place does anyways

Compared to most pizzerias i agree, but the comment was relative to the Little Caesar's 'Hot&Ready' - and compared to those I find the Safeway frozen ones to be far superior.

Best thing about making your own is you can be a lot more creative with the ingredients. Today I made one that had the following ingredients, in order:

BBQ sauce, parmesan cheese, grilled chicken, romano & parmesan cheese, caramelized onions, a sprinkle of mozzarella, bacon, black pepper and red pepper flakes.

Was delicious after my 3 hour ride

I'm spoiled. My workplace caters in pizza for lunch for us every Friday. From Giordano's nonetheless. They bring pasta, chicken, french fries, salad and cookies too. Often times I bring home left overs. Yes, sometimes on my bike.

There was only one place making pizza in our town for several years and it is awful, so I stopped buying pizzeria pizza. Instead I buy a frozen (Delissio or similar) plain cheese or pepperoni pizza and add fresh toppings such as onions, peppers, mushrooms, etc. before baking. Kicks the arse of the god-awful pizza we used to buy.

Another place on the edge of town has started selling pizza now and it is fantastic, but I am so used to paying $5 for a pizza instead of $15 or $20 that I will probably stick with frozen pizzas most of the time.

Edit: I would consider biking to pick up pizza, but if the weather is cold like in my area or in Michigan, the pizza would likely be cold and damp from condensation by the time I got home. Driving to pick up pizza is one of the things cars are actually useful for.

I didn't think little ceasars could be legally called pizza. Isn't it "pizza type food" :d even calling it food is a stretch.

So I hope you'll understand that for me it's important to save money wherever possible. I am not saying no one should ever order pizza, or that for the average person it is a bad idea, I simply mean that for myself the savings of biking to a pizza shop outweigh the convenience of getting it delivered.

Homemade beats ready made 99% of the time at my house. You can choose your ingredients to fit your lifestyle. During garden season our pizzas are primarily covered in fresh veggies. I make my own sauce up with tomatoes from the garden, we always make a huge batch and save the extra. My wife claimed it was quicker to get delivery or pickup a pizza so I called her bluff. I can produce a fresh pizza in my oven faster than the closest delivery joint can bring it. And mine tastes a helluva lot better.

The Round Table up the street in particular does just really good pizza (I say,) and features a leisurely hours-long daily buffet for less than a tenner. They put-out all their specialties, and custom jobs on request. The one thing I would change--rather add--is a sourdough crust. A local shop has this and it is go-ooo-od. 'Tis a shame I can't handle calories like I once could.

Otherwise I do as wahoonc^^, 'cept for flouring-up my own crust. Sourdough baguette from Winco. They have this established starter that's superduper!

All you need is 4 ingredients and a small mixer to get started! Flour, water, salt & yeast. Plenty of simple recipes you can look up. You can find a small mixer for free on craigslist most likely, that's how I got my last two.

Wow, lot's of replies to this thread since Thursday. Thanks everyone for all the tips on getting and making pizza, with or without a bicycle. Now all we need is someone to show us how to use a bike to make pizza...

I have to say I hadn't considered using a pita as a crust for a homemade pizza, although if you're making quick pizza to go it's really good to use english muffins. Just take english muffins (the hockey puck sized ones), spread them out in halves with the inside facing upwards, and cover each one with spaghetti/tomato sauce. Put shredded cheese on top and add any favorite toppings, then stick it in the oven to bake. They're fast to make, small and easy to eat, and you can use different toppings on each one. It's a great easy recipe and works wonders when you're cooking for kids.

Still disagree with the recurring sentiment that Little Caesar's is awful pizza. Perhaps my local one is an exception to the rule but their pies are better than several other pizza chains/pizzerias that charge more. There are a lot of pizza places in my area, and obviously LC's is the fast food of pizza, but it isn't too bad, at least locally. It also has the advantage of being right next to the Dairy Queen (that hasn't ever sold meal food, like the fries and fast food you'll find at other DQs). If I were eating a pizza for taste, I'd probably go to Pizza Hut or Hungry Howie's or Papa Romano's or best of all, California Pizza Kitchen.

Glad to hear all the interesting things about everyone's pizza tactics.

As someone that spent years making pizzas in various upscale italian bistros I just about spit out my drink when I read that. How? Just....does not compute. They use frozen crust, they don't even make fresh dough!

Bit it is so greasy! You can't beat the squirt of oil you get when you bite into a Pizza hut crust! (I know it sounds gross, but I mean it - if I couldn't hear my arteries hardening when eating it, I would eat it all the time.

BTW, I am going to try pizza from scratch next weekend. I have made many pizzas with ready-made crust, but I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to make a nice *******-thin crust of my own.

And, when canoe camping I bring cheese, a small tin of sauce, and some pitas and make campfire pizza one night. The kids probably wouldn't touch it at home but they devour it around a campfire.

Edit: I am willing to accept the risk that someone might make a racist insult against me and other people of European descent if I could properly describe the small crispy baked items I eat with cheese.

If you are going to make your own pizza, at least use fresh ingredients. The pics of the prepackaged sauce, cheese, and peperoni are not the way to make a good pizza.

Ain't nobody got time to make their own cheese.

Also it's hard to call either parmesean or pepperoni fresh in any sense

Just like bike snobs, doncha know? Nothing is good enuff for a pizza, beer or foodie snob!

Me, I never met a pizza or beer that that I didn't like, especially when eaten/drunk together.

Pizza is like sex, always good, sometimes better, or a lot better, but always good.

If you want to use that analogy, then the difference between banging and ugly, fat, pimply cow and a smoking hot 10/10 is the difference between buying a bag of flour and a 5$ mixer at a garage sale or not. If getting the sexiest girls in the world required that little effort who would choose the alternatives? That's how pizza is to me. Its such a low-effort food. Take 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of room temperature water, a pinch of dry active yeast and salt, mix, let it proof for 20 minutes, then make yourself the best damn pizza you've ever had.

Oh, one more pro-tip. The hotter the oven the better the pizza. I've never seen a conventional home oven that goes too high for a pizza. At the upscale italian places I worked at we'd use temps in excess of 700 degrees. Crank that ****.
