Visualising one's daily travels as a single trip

Hi all,

Anyone tried explaining the distances they travel to someone from a small locality? I did so this morning, the discussion was regarding wear and tear of electronic devices when used mobile for long distances. In total I've ridden over 15000km in the last 3 years. (I know some of you will put that to shame.)

How does one explain it to someone who possibly doesn't travel long distances?

I've had issues with dry joints on the FT-857D which I bought in late
2011. That radio has travelled over 15000km. Let me put that into
perspective:

Do that run 6½ times. That's how far that radio has been bounced around
on the bicycle.

Now looking at that map, it seems hard to believe that was done just in short <50km trips.

I'd just do it by daily or weekly figures. Most non cyclists will be impressed that you ride almost 100km per week, because that is beyond their experience, but they can imagine the distance.

+1

Or maybe break it down by years ... so if you ride 5000 km/year, Vancouver, BC to Miami, FL is 4500 km. North Americans may understand that.

Or if you're in Australia, Perth to Brisbane via Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney is 5200 km.
