RAW ( Ride across Wisconsin)

Aug. 29. Ride with Jens Voigt and Trek team. 175 miles from Dubuque to Kenosha. That is a long, hilly one day ride. I will be volunteering at Beloit stop.

A friend of mine is doing it. She just completed the 250 km Dairyland Dare, so I guess she's capable. I wish I was local, I'd love to volunteer.

I'm signed up! Long and hilly.... please tell me we'll at least have a tail wind!

The fact that Jens Voigt will be the sole reason for signing up... I'm a SufferFest fan and in one of the videos (The Rookie) you drop Jens... so when I seen he would be there, the first thing I thought was "It's The Rookie in real life!" LOL! Ok, so I doubt i'll drop him... unless of course he flats!

I had a passing thought of doing this ride.

Then I woke up!

For me, riding a century not an issue. But 175 m. Damn!

I will enjoy helping out, as we have a couple riders from our group making the trek.

Yeah, the wife was questioning my sanity when I told her I was going to do this ride... I figure as long as I can sit in with a good group of folks at a very reasonable pace I should be able to complete the ride. I completed my SufferFest Knighthood in July, which means I was on my spin bike for like 10 hours... so RAW should be a lot easier mentally at least! So I decide to not let the fear of failure from stopping me from attempting this ride... and like I told the wife, what's the worst thing that happens... I end up having to ride back in a SAG van...

I survived! Took me just under 14 hours to complete but I DID IT!!! My longest ride and the most climbing I've ever done in a single day! For an inaugural ride it was very well done! Especially considering just how big of a ride this was!

Congratulations!

I rode it as well with a couple of friends from Trek. When the Trek Factory Racing boys rolled by, with about 50 riders in tow and pushing 28 mph or so on the flats, support vehicles on both ends, it added an air of excitement that I'd never experienced in a group ride. Best of all though, was the great Wisconsin hospitality, relatively quiet roads, and the sense of collective adventure. From the folks I chatted with, for even the experienced riders this was a PR in terms of distance and saddle time. The sense of accomplishment at the end was palpable.

My sense is next year may be the same, one hard core day, routine. The only drop outs I heard about were the TFR riders, who bagged it in Beloit and caught a bus to Chicago. If so, keep in mind, the hills on the first 80 miles are sharp and abundant, even for a Colorado boy.

Thanks!

There were flats? Actually the flat section between 80 and 100 reminded me of home... I can literally ride all day and have less than 100 feet of climbing around here...

The hospitality was amazing!!!! And the people that lined up along the road to cheer us on was incredible!! Definitely helped me mentally to push on to the end!!

For an inaugural ride, it was very impressive!

And yes, RAW had a number of PRs for me as well...
