During the school year I attend the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. During the summers I live in Minnetonka, MN. Really couldn't ask for much better riding, Minneapolis is a great city to bike in with tons of paths and bike lanes, and there is nothing like biking around an awesome lake in the summers.

Not too bad, but I usually head West or South when I ride, just to get out of town and onto some less-traveled roads. Hines Drive is also a nice ride;

Chicago - Ravenswood neighborhood. Used to commute 17mi round trip 4-5 days a week. Soon to move to the Urbana-Champaign area. It'll be 5mi each way on country roads. Trading skyscrapers for prairie!

Hi Stealth'd

Check out Folks On Spokes ( http://folksonspokes.com ) Especially look at the Ride Schedule. There are 10-12 mph, 12-14 mph, 15-17 mph, plus other rides every weekend. It's a long established club with group rides starting in places like Matteson, Frankfort, and other southland locations.

Madison WI

Hey there, Madison, WI here. I mostly ride solo and commute to work 3 days per week. I'd do it 5 days, but the need to drop my son off at his grandmothers necessitates a car trip twice weekly. I try to get in longer rides in the evening and on weekends. Originally started riding as a replacement for smoking. I know, right? Well it worked out pretty well. Still smoke free, and still riding as much as I possibly can. Loving every minute of it.

My ride started at Pere Marquette State Park - I rode the bike trail for a couple of miles to Grafton, got bored, and thought I'd head for the hills. So I headed up what I thought was called Mason Hollow Road, but google maps has it listed first as Springfield Street, and then Rowing Ridge Road. At the base of the bluff I could see the top of the climb and my heart jumped. Holy crap it was steep. I got into my triple and started pounding away. Had I stopped pedaling I would have stopped immediately. Half way up it flatted out a bit and there was some shade, so I stopped to catch my breath. Don't recall ever having to stop on a hill before. Once I was pushing so hard on the pedals in order to keep moving that my front wheel lifted off the ground slightly. I'd love to find out what the grade is on that monster. I finished my ride by coming in the back way to Pere Marquette park - that is one fantastic place to ride. Smooth pavement, lots of hills and dips and turns, with minimal traffic. And most of it is shaded, which is great on a hot day in August in southern Illinois.

Bill,
I have ridden that route. No way could I ride up that hill on Springfield Street. Even on my mtb I had to walk. I ride Pere Marquette Park often. The hills and scenery are great and traffic is normally very light. My favorite time to ride the park is during winter on studded tires. I'm planning on riding from P.M. Park to the St. Louis Arch and back within the next week or two. It's all bike trail that runs along the river. I haven't figured the milage but it should be just short of a century. I live near P.M. on the banks of the Mississippi.

Indianapolis here. I guess that's considered near enough to the lakes. We don't seem to fit any better into any of the other regional categories. I do get to the Chicago area occasionally to see my brother (Oak Park), and to the far-north suburban Detroit area where my sister-in-law lives (Clarkston).

Goshen, Indiana, but a native of Elkhart. I commute, I ride the roads, I ride the trails when the poison ivy dies off. I'm 50 and suck at criteriums. Not so bad at TT, though.

Yes, as far north as you can get and still be in Indy. Near 96th and College.
